Stephen Platt is a highly respected practitioner of financial crime prevention and the conduct of related regulatory investigations. He is an English Barrister and an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. As the President of OCEG, a global nonprofit that addresses corporate governance, risk and compliance, I was privileged to read a pre-publication copy of Criminal Capital and found it presents a compelling, concerning, and clear view of the ways that financial institutions tacitly enable crime, and challenges both banks and regulators to stop the madness. It's a must read for anyone involved in or concerned about financial risk management. Stephen Platt takes a deep look at various ways that crime is facilitated and outlines the money flow in each situation, which helps the reader understand the complex patterns and outcomes. I'll be starting my second read of this one soon.

Dirty funds take many forms and find their way into ...

I previously worked in the field. This book deserves enormous praise and attention for its two most important insights. The first is the understanding that the bank risk-taking that has come under public scrutiny is the result of the same recklessly greedy and negligent culture on the part of bankers that allows financial crime to flourish; they are both symptoms of the same problem.

The second, and perhaps more important, is the recognition that the "standard" description of money laundering--placement, layering, and integration--is woefully outdated and ineffective as a mental model. Dirty funds take many forms and find their way into all sorts of financial products and transactions that are incorrectly identified as low-risk.

These two insights are not complicated, but they are an incredibly powerful theoretical shift in understanding money laundering. Effective prevention requires their adoption. The author does a great service to the field with this thorough treatment.

A really interesting and thought provoking work which highlights the cancer in the financial services industry worldwide. It's long overdue for controls to be introduced on incompetent senior executives who milk organizations and go home smiling with huge bonuses which are not deserved in many instances

Steve Cyr is known to be the best casino host in Las Vegas. In this book you will get the chance to see what the life of a revered casino host is like and that nothing is off-limits to a Vegas "Whale". You will also understand what a cut-throat type of business casino hosting is.

Wondered what it was like to be a high roller?

If you want to read about Las Vegas's highest of high rollers, "whales," and what a casino will do to keep them happy, then this book won't fail to satisfy. Along the way you'll meet Steve Cyr, a young Turk casino host. A host is the casino's employee whose job it is to look after the big players and to keep them happy and, more importantly, keep them coming back and gambling more and more.

Much of the book is built around Cyr and his style (his style can be both inspiring and annoying). Cyr is about 70% time-share/condo salesperson and 35% cruise director and 10% Kato Kaelin (yeah, he's 115%). But the book is more than Cyr and his successful effort to modernize the way casinos market to high rollers. You'll meet some of the whales themselves. You'll find out about the mini-palaces casinos have built just for them. And one subject usually kept off the record is covered: do casinos provide sex to their top players?

The book is not a superficial People Magazine of famous celebs who frequent Vegas. It's about both sides of the table, the whales and the casinos and hosts who harpoon them. The dark side of gambling is offered up as gamblers spin downward out of control, losing millions. There are plenty of details and that's what really distinguishes this book. Other books have touched on the fantasy of the high roller's life. Such as Lifestyles of a High Roller, Anderson's Burning the Tables, Rubin's Comp City and a couple specials on the Travel Channel, but nothing has offered up the depth or detail of Whale Hunt.

Not the definitive text on the subject

This is written by several physicians who are associated with one of the shunt manufacturers. The history chapter and chapter on shunt infections and complications are, in my opinion, useful.

Jaimie shares the storytelling with his father, an intelligent Scottish doctor whose ebullient personality is only slightly undermined by a weakness for gambling and strong drink. Reader Michael Lee is totally convincing as he reproduces, first, the thick Scottish brogue of the father; and then, the excited innocence of 14-year-old Jaimie. This audiobook's appended afterword, citing the author's impeccable research, makes it clear why the book won the Pulitzer Prize in 1959. Like Lonesome Dove (Audio Reviews, LJ 2/15/93), another Pulitzer Prize winner, it transforms history into breathtaking adventure. Highly recommended.

Taylor was a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a staff writer for The New Yorker for many years.

Great story for younger teens.

Good first person account of the gold rush as told by a teen boy and his father. Hopefully, it is factually well researched, in which case it gives you a good idea of what life was like back then for settlers and Native Americans. Even though the story line was filled with adventures throughout, I got the feeling that the first few were added for show rather than to further the plot. None-the-less, by the end of the story I had been caught in its web.

Although this novel brought Taylor a Pulitzer Prize I don't find it that intriguing. Jaimie's travels are full of historic references and period descriptions that gave me the feeling that the plot and characters were developed to fill in a early 20th century travelogue rather than adding nuance and color to the characters lives.
I guess I was hoping for something closer to Lonsome Dove than Travels with Charlie.

Go West Young Man... with your eccentric father...

(4.75 stars and my copy of this book is a vintage paperback)
This is the story of a precocious young Kentucky boy who goes West with his father in 1849 to hopefully strike it rich in the gold fields of California. There's adventures, some great characters, some killing, some humor, and satire. I'm taking off a quarter of a star for at least one episode in the book that goes against what I've read in the past. The author has a band of Crow Indians attack a wagon train. The Crows were known to be friendly to the whites. It's not a big deal, but irked me and thus the 4.75 stars. (Of course, there's always the chance that the author read something like this once and used it in his book.)

About the Author

KOKAN NAGAYAMA is one of the great contemporary sword polishers. He has been designated a mukansa ("without supervision") polisher, a level above the regular sword-polisher ranking system. He is a judge of both the sword polishing and swordsmithing competitions of the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai or NBTHK (Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords), for which organization he serves as an instructor of sword polishing. In 1967 in Kanagawa Prefecture he founded the Nagayama Kenshujo (Nagayama Japanese Sword-polishing Institute), where he taught the art of polishing to both polishers and smiths for twenty years. He has organized several token-kai (sword study groups) and instructed hundreds of sword enthusiasts.

KENJI MISHINA, the translator, is a sword polisher who served as chief instructor at the Nagayama Kenshujo for seven years beginning in 1979. He has been authorized by the Japanese government to restore swords designated as kokuho (national treasures) and juyo bunkazai (important cultural assets). He has been awarded numerous prizes in the sword polishing competitions of the NBTHK. He lived in England for six years beginning in 1986, where he worked for the British Museum, lectured at the monthly meetings of the Token Society of Great Britain, and received a request from the British royal family to polish its sword collection. He is currently writing a series of articles on the Japanese sword for this site. He is the translator of The New Generation of Japanese Swordsmiths.

The next step after reading Yumoto's book for collectors

The Connoisseur's Book, is just that. It is very detailed and a must for any serious student of Nihonto.
The pluses are the incredible depth of research and information. Nagayama details all five priciple schools as well as the common traits and outstanding smiths of the schools.
The only downside is the lack of full color (or even b/w for that matter)picures of the blades and styles he is talking about. However, the drawings do well to illustrate the style. I just would have prefered to see actual blades since that is what I would be looking for as a collecter.
Overall- a very good read - Nagayama gives a great history of the development of the Nihoto.
As a reference tool, the book is not well set up for quick access, but does provide the information needed if you mark the various pages.
Basically more detailed that Yumoto's book and the next step for the collector in his study of Nihonto.

An excellent piece of work!

The Connoisseur's Book is exceptionally detailed and not to mention very aesthetically pleasing. The book itself has the feel and look of a high-quality encyclopedia. As should be expected, the information inside is very well detailed. It is an excellent book and I very strongly recommend it, particularly if you are ready to start deeper in-depth studies of Nihonto. For a novice, I would probably suggest the books by Sato and Yumoto. But this is what I feel would be a step beyond those.
Absolutely marvelous. Well written, very clear, of course as was mentioned in another review it sorta lacks photographs, but that's quite OK, as the illustrations do an excellent job of portraying things.
For those of you who are more passively interested, this book will be overkill and unnecessary when you can do well with the aforementioned books, but if you are serious...this book is a splendid piece of work that will be VERY enjoyable for you to delve into. Not only for information, but as a good read.

Japanese Sword Collector's Kantei Encyclopedia

National Living Treasure Kokan Nagayama's "Connoisseur's Book of Japanese Swords" is one of the definitive references on Japanese swords (nihonto) available in English translation. I bought it after either purchasing or familiarizing myself with several other essential, but much more basic tomes such as John Yumoto's "The Samurai Sword: A Handbook," Kazan Sato's "The Japanese Sword: A Comprehensive Guide," and Kapp and Yoshihara's "The Craft of the Japanese Sword." Each of these books has a niche, along with relative strengths and weaknesses (e.g., Yumoto's book is but a brief overview with crude hand illustrations, Kapp & Yoshihara focus on a general overview of forging, etc.) such that those seriously entering the world of nihonto would be well-served to collect them all (after all, all of these books together are going to cost a infinitesimal fraction of the cost of a nihonto and will therefore be a sound investment).

The stated intent of the Connosieur's Book is to arm the novice with a beginning understanding of the types of things that one would need to learn about kantei, the art of nihonto appraisal. Having said that, the level of detail here is far beyond that found in most other introductory books about nihonto for novices, and probably more than the casual fan of "samurai swords" would benefit from. The book is really designed as a reference and includes considerable detail. It does a nice job of going through major and subtle differences of nihonto through different eras and schools of sword-making, along with a brief historical context to explain changes and influences. It likewise gives an illustrated reference to variations in sugata (shape), design (sori, mune, shinogi), hamon (hardened edge), nakago (tang), kissaki (tip), hada (steel grain), horimono (engravings) and the like. There are no photos, but there are ample oshigata-style illustrations showing the subtlest variations to match with the text. Significant detail is included listing various schools of forging and individual smiths -- all of which are essential building blocks for kantei. There's also an appendix on inspection etiquette, charts organizing smiths and characteristics of their blades, and a glossary.

It's therefore a fine reference, from one of Japan's leading authorities, but as with the other books of the genre, there are strengths and limitations. The strong point of this text is its encyclopedic detail along with decent organization and illustrations. I picked this book up hoping to learn more (having read the other books, taken a course in forging of Japanese swords, and training in Japanese swordsmanship) about differences in major traditions of swordmaking. The book helps to explain that, but perhaps not in the clearest way. As but one simple example, Nagayama Sensei writes, "Swords of the Shoshu tradition typically have abundant ji-nie as well as chikei in the ji, and a hamon consisting of nie with vigorous activity such as kinsuji and inazuma." The Japanese terms can be cross-referenced elsewhere in the book, but they are presented individually and piecemeal, such that it can often be hard for the novice reader to get any kind of clear overall mental picture of the subtleties referred to in the text (e.g. what does it really mean that the nie is 'abundant' or 'vigorous?'). So what is missing? More illustrations of entire swords (and at least some photos) could be of use, along with side-by-side comparisons to understand the relative differences between styles (e.g. here is a typical Bizen, here is a typical Shoshu and here's how they're different), or maybe a few examples of swords in which the reader is taken through the process of kantei.

Of course, there is only so much you can teach in a book... you can't very well expect to read a manual on swordsmanship, car repair, or reading EKG's and then get right to it -- rather the manual gives you an overview, you then take up the practice, and later you go back to the book for reference. So it is here -- I seriously doubt the book would be very helpful for those who don't plan to earnestly start collecting nihonto and studying kantei, and in fact the level of detail and complexity might very well turn some away. But for those looking for "the next level" of reference after Yumoto or Sato, this book is a good start to learn and refer back to as you then track down, join, and attend your local Token-Kai. It's probably one of the best English language references, but it's not a tutorial or class-in-a-book nor does it claim to be.

Best combination of theory, practice and philosophy

Managers who want to be leaders need good advice on how to lead. Sims and Lorenzi provide that much needed advice, offering basic descriptions of what a person can (learn to) do to lead effectively: Articulate a vision, set goals, teach subordinates the required skills and build confidence in their ability to perform, provide models of good work, empower teams, reward performance and reprimand and correct errors. Behavior and results are important. Rather than supervise closely, good leaders can offer a "super" vision that allows people to self-manage and self-lead.
And there is more than behavior that needs to be managed. The psychology of leadership also requires attention to the patterns of thoughts employed by leaders and their followers. There are "scripts" and "schemas" that provide a structure to one's thinking. Understanding and managing these basic patterns and expectations helps a leader to facilitate progress towards wok goals and accomplishment. People are comfortable with and empowered by coherent patterns of thought.
Using short stories, models, history and personal examples, Sims and Lorenzi provide a basic education for the aspiring leadership, offering research-tested, easy-to-follow and to use advice for the leader. Applications are global in nature; this is not simply a book for American, corporate leaders. Most important, the leader will learn to teach others to lead themselves.
This is a short, substantive, engaging treatise worth reading.

Love This Whole Series

We have several books from this series and love all of them. My daughter enjoys piano so much more when she is working on songs that she knows and that the people she plays for know as well. I especially like that the back page of each book is a Music Dictionary that shows all of the symbols used in that book and names them and then defines what they are.
