Immensely brave book about past sadness

I was looking for another book with "hope" in the title, when I met Dr Michael Davey in the bookshop I had entered. He briefly described his book and my first feeling was that I couldn't bear to read about such sadness.

I bought the book nevertheless and it was indeed awful to read about the disappointments and anguish of a little boy, making his way through a world peopled by many ruthless adults, many disfunctional adults and a few decent people. It is not surprising that many young people who go through such childhoods choose to go onto drugs and behave in a random, self-destructive way. They have nothing to guide them towards positive, realistic behaviour. However Michael Davey seems to have dug deep and found the courage to rise above the pain.

Bit by bit young he has found his way from misery towards hope and on towards a better life. Many have traveled such a path. For instance many refugees come from lives of horror and despair. However it is still heart wrenching to read of a little boy being so alone in the middle of it all.

I am so glad the Dr J Michael Davy's book is now a best-seller. The act of writing it probably helped him to discard some of the recurring memories and intrusive thoughts that plague those who have lived through trauma. It seems that he is becoming ever more healed and that his life can now be whole and happy and also his family can be protected from the misery that he went through.

The old fairy story of spinning straw into gold has a useful image here. Dr Davey has taken the straws of rejection, disappointment, disillusionment and pain and he has spun them into the gold of a well-told tale and a happier life.

Comparisons with other sectors such as roads and pensions, and in particular the health care sector are presented. A multifaceted approach using case studies, phenomenology, interviews, historical and comparative analyses offers a more complete picture of national management of public service and the structure of government administration. The book also investigates the contribution made by the international aid organisations.

A detailed study of institutional transformation in Kyrgyzstan, this book is of interest to academics studying former socialist countries in transition, the history of the Soviet Union and Central Asian studies in general.

About the Author
M. Gordon Hunter is Professor of Information Systems in the Faculty of Management at The University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Gordon has previously held academic positions at universities in Canada, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He has held visiting positions at universities in Australia, Monaco, Germany, New Zealand, and the U.S. During July and August of 2005 Gordon was a Visiting Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Felix B Tan is Professor of Information Systems and Chair of Business Information Systems discipline at Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand). He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Global Information Management. He is on the Executive Council and is Fellow of the Information Resources Management Association. He was also on the Council of the Association for Information System between 2003-2005. Dr. Tan s current research interests are in electronic commerce, global information management, business-IT alignment, and the management of IT. Dr. Tan has published in MIS Quarterly, Information & Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, IEEE Transactions on Personal Communications, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Information Technology, International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, as well as other journals and refereed conference proceedings. Dr. Tan has over 25 years experience in information systems management and consulting with large multinationals, as well as university teaching and research in Singapore, Canada, and New Zealand.

'The most important intelligence agent in the history of the Irish State'

Sean O'Callaghan although born in Tralee County Kerry in the Republic of Ireland was destined from the crib to be an IRA member like his father. He joined at age 15 in 1969 motivated to do so because he wanted to protect Catholics in the north from pogroms. But after coming to the realization that many IRA members were sectarian and after growing disillusioned with what he came to view as senseless violence. He volunteered his services as an informant to the Irish police, for which he took not one pence in monetary reward. While undercover he rose to become the highest ranking IRA officer in the Republic. His memoir gives the reader a bird's eye insider's view of how the highest echelons of the IRA and Sinn Feinn function and is full of personality assessments and illuminating anecdotes about it's ruling oligarchy.

Missed its mark

This book tackles a huge subject with much honesty. Sean O'Callaghan puts his hands up and freely admits that he was seduced by and participated in militant republicanism and fought for his fellow countrymen with zeal. This is not unusual and many writers and commentators have described this real experience very well in the past.
Sean O'Callaghan stands out as a fairly unique subject in being a high level operative who has completely repudiated the philosophy of the IRA. The critical stage of realisation and crystallisation of his personal morality lack description. Whilst we take one view on O'Callaghan's actions as a person, his power as a writer is lacking and he missed a golden opportunity to describe the mental anguish leading to resolve that he must have experienced. A few notes on emotions here and there don't do justice to the tumultuous experience he has absorbed. Perhaps O'Callaghan isn't too bothered - after all his mission is clearly stated as damage maximisation to the IRA. However, given his literary ambitions, he might have spent more time on describing himself rather than listing activities which we can't really absorb en masse.
Whatever one's politics, O'Callaghan's courage is assured. The book is a necessary read in understanding the development through the 1980's of Irish politics. However, O'Callaghan's direction is inflexible where Sinn Fein's was dynamic. O'Callaghan's resolve to fight the IRA and its political group does not consider their move toward a peace strategy to have any merit and to be a cynical exercise. It is his account, of course, and his opinion, but it is certainly out of step with the rest of the world. Progress has been made.
Overall, the book promises more than it delivers. It reads as a historical narrative rather than an exploration of a personal journey. When an experienced writer produces a biography, I'll buy that.

Nice to read

This book is about Sean O'Callaghan's life as a member of the IRA and his subsequent life as an informer for the Irish gardai. Good to read and interesting as it gives a good insight into his life from when he was a small boy. At first, I thought this would be similar to Martin McGartland's books, however, it is not. O'Callaghan gives a little insight into several issues surrounding the conflict between the IRA and the British and Irish forces. At one stage whilst talking about his youth he explains the link between Irish Catholicism and Irish Nationalism which highlights how much of a fraud the Irish Catholic Church really is.
O'Callaghan's book is a good read but not if you are more interested in the politics and issues of the Northern Irish Troubles. This book is mainly about the terrorist operations he helped to execute and later to prevent. It also gives solid evidence that Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness were leading members of the Irish Republican Army before they became politicians with Sinn Fein.

About the Author
A former Deputy Director of History & Heritage for the Canadian Armed Forces and past commanding officer of the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, Lt Col McCulloch holds a graduate degree in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada. He is now serving as a NATO senior staff officer at Headquarters Supreme Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, Virginia. He has written extensively for military history journals and magazines in Canada, the US and the UK. In 1998 he served as a historical consultant on CBC's Canada: A People's History, and has also appeared on A&E's Civil War Journal. Ian's latest book is Sons of the Mountains: The Highland Regiments in the French and Indian War, 1756-67 (Purple Mountain Press, 2006). The author lives in Virginia Beach, VA.

'Recruit the Highland Lads!'

This is very possibly the best book from Osprey Military Publishing I have ever read. I have never found any of them to be half as captivating as this one, yet in the same breath it is thoroughly researched and packed with information on the topic.

As the title indicates, this book's focus is on the three regiments of Highland infantry who were recruited for service in the New World, and experienced the hellish fighting and campaigning of the French-Indian War. Most of the original recruits were about 18 in age, and were sons of the Highlanders who had charged the Moor of Culloden. The only way the new generation of Highlanders could take to the battlefield in kilt and plaid with the traditional weapons of their forefathers was if they fought afield for the Crown, and so many were urged to 'go for a soldier' by their families.

The author takes a fresh new look at the Highlanders serving in America, and the British world in general in the 18th Century. He dispells with some common misconceptions and stereotypes, like that all the Highlanders were giants and born warriors (most were reluctant young farmers standing about 5'4'').

Just some of the many fascinating topics explored in this book are the Highlanders' training, the finer details of their dress and weaponry, their medicines and diets, their tactics and the bloody experiences of Indian fighting, as well as their relationships with their comrades, women, religion, other ethnic groups, and even the wild animals of the Frontier.

The color plates, by the talented Steve Noon, are some of the best I have yet seen from Osprey. Unfortunately, we only get 7 of them, but they are all colorful and detailed, and some contain hidden humor. The 4 battle-scenes in particular are excellent; the artist does a breathtaking job capturing the raw emotions and expressions of the sword-wielding Highlanders as they clash with the French and the Indians.

This book is the first in a new (and in my opinion, a much more attractive) Warrior format. Some of the photographs and drawings are in color, a first for Osprey. Also, like some other recent Warrior titles, the color plates are scattered throughout the text rather than grouped together in the center as in most Osprey books; I find that I like this better, especially since plate commentaries are next to the paintings instead of at the back of the book.

In short, this is a detailed, highly informative, hard-to-put-down, and beautifully illustrated guide to the young Highlanders who left their homes for the other side of the earth, some because they were made to, others because they longed for adventure or the chance to avenge their clans' honor. It is a must for anyone interested in Scottish military history or the French-Indian Wars, and serves as something of a sequel to Osprey's many valuable titles on the Jacobite Revolts and the Culloden Campaign.

Good Overview of Forgotten Battalions

This booklet is a useful synopsis of the much larger 2 volume set, "Sons of the Mountains", and as such represents decent value for the price. It sets out the findings of original research and restates known but ignored facts, blessedly avoiding the repetition of myths, particularly with reference to events within the former 13 colonies. The three Scottish units covered, the Royal 42nd, the 77th (Montgomery's), and the 78th (Fraser's) soldiered through many hard years of campaigning throughout the canadas and the lower (13)colonies during the French-Indian/7 Years War period. The murderous battles, long debilitating marches through the wilderness, and effects of disease claimed more than 80% of their initial strength, a sobering reminder of the price the infantry invariably pay in war. All in all a good read with plenty of interesting tales to tell.

One of Osprey's best. I would recommend you use this as a companion book
to "Sons of the Mountains" by the same author a more detailed work about the Highland Regiments serving in America. Also The art work in the book is outstanding. If you like reading about the Highlands and Highland Regiments this book and "Sons of the Mountains" are a must.
