Best real-world lessons distilled into one easy to read volume

I have been doing process improvement for half my professional career - seeing yet another book on the subject, I was tempted to yawn - but as I got into this book ( a very easy read BTW ) I realized that the author had managed to distill so much of the best hard-earned, real-world lessons, that I have lived to tell about, down into this one volume. Not only was it all the things that I had learned the hard way, I am sure I could NOT have organized it any better. I realized this was the perfect book to introduce my clients to BEFORE I start talking to them about process and innovation.

I have since heard the author speak on the subject and was blown away by the depth and precision that he delivered the key points. Hamme is able to jump right to the key issues very quickly and turn the challenges into new opportunities. Well worth the time to read - and an excellent recipe for implementing several core business processes and disciplines within an organization. My guess is that the author or his team, or both, could help any company implement a customer focused process innovation too.

Thought provoking read of how to make innovation a part of the everyday life of your company. Innovation is hard and it seems only found in small companies but Dave creates a framework to keep the process alive and well in any size organization. Book should be shared by leadership teams to discuss as they are creating next year's strategic and operational plans.

This is great Kool-Aid and easy to digest!

I found this book a breath of fresh air and would love to see this practice used by more companies. Being an Industrial & Systems Engineer by discipline and a Quality Management, Manufacturing, and Product Development professional for 20+ years, I've seen too many disconnects when it comes to effectively and efficiently getting what the customer wants, when they want it, and at the right price. Far too often, solutions are late to market, over-priced, and the final product/service is not meeting expectations. This book lays the foundation and has the blue-prints to get it right the first time and be able to adjust quickly to "unforeseen" market conditions.

I would love to see this practice used by more companies. Far too often, great decisions falter because the executives are not in tune with enough corporate processes (at the mega process level) to know if their strategy will be successful at the transactional level. And what happens if the executives have "yes" people working with them? Executives armed with a good foundation on how the company operates (blocking & tackling at a high level) with a methodology of checks/balances creates a consistent culture of iterative innovation with built in vetting that looks at a bigger picture without slowing things down with hierarchy and processes for the sake of process.

I understand why the name was called Customer Focused Process Innovation. Not sure how else to quickly summarize this paradigm shift. Read it from beginning to end and you too will call it a breath of fresh air! This is great Kool-Aid and easy to digest!

This peppy, somewhat pop-psych book argues that we don't have to change what we eat as much as how, and that by making more mindful food-related decisions we can start to eat and live better. The author's approach isn't so much a diet book as a how-to on better facilitating the interaction between the feed-me messages of our stomachs and the controls in our heads. In their particulars, the research summaries are entertaining, like an experiment that measured how people ate when their plates were literally "bottomless," but the cumulative message and even the approach feels familiar and not especially fresh. Wansink examines popular diets like the South Beach and Atkins regimes, and offers a number of his own strategies to help focus on what you eat: at a dinner party, "try to be the last person to start eating." Anyone who's tried to follow a strict eating regimen knows how futile it sometimes seems. Nutritional science and marketing professor Wansink explores some of the psychological aspects of overeating to explain why we in fact consume more than we believe we do. He advocates weight-loss diets that cut calories by cutting overall consumption, instead of draconian elimination of intake. Wansink finds the greatest value in retraining one's mind and its perceptions by devices such as making sure one's plate contains at least half vegetables or salad. He suggests that a dieter will automatically eat less in social situations by being the last to start eating and the first to finish. He assesses the dangers of food shopping in bulk-portion stores, where customers are virtually begged to overconsume. Wansink's dual approach emphasizing food knowledge and self-knowledge offers a sensible route to permanent weight loss. How "Mindless Eating" CHANGED MY LIFE – or My Eating Habits anyway.

My genetics are pretty good, so I've never been a "dieting" type person. I've never really watched my weight. And until recently, I had never really attempted to diet at all. But, after already being overweight by about 15 or so pounds, and then gaining an extra 30-some pounds due to doctor-prescribed, drug-induced steroids, I finally had arrived at the point to where I needed to lose (NOTE: At my heaviest, I weighed 192 lbs. – that's borderline "obese" for a man of my height (5' 8"). By the time I started my diet I weighed 183 lbs).

Due to my health, I'm not able to do any real meaningful exercise that can contribute towards any significant calories-burned. So, after doing a little research, I discovered that a PORTION-CONTROL-ONLY type diet would probably work best. After committing to such a diet (June 2015), I found MINDLESS EATING on Amazon. Although not technically a "dieting" book, but more like a book on the science behind food marketing and WHY we eat, it was exactly what I needed. I picked it up about six weeks after my diet had started. Since that time, I have steadily lost 3.5 to 4 pounds a month. That's a slow loss, but it's a healthy loss.

As of this review (Feb. 1, 2016), I have lost 27 lbs. in the last 7 months, and I'm well on my way to hitting the perfect weight range for my age, height and physical-makeup. I credit MINDLESS EATING for giving me the mental boost and an assurance that dieting WITHOUT EXERCISE, and dieting WITHOUT GIVING UP THE FOODS YOU LOVE, is really possible – I'm living proof.

If you're new to dieting, have decent weight genetics, are in a position to where you're not able to exercise, and want an easy, fun-filled, no-nonsense, common sense read, then I believe that MINDLESS EATING is for you. Thank you, Mr. Wansink, for writing this book!

UPDATE: My diet which used MINDLESS EATING as a guide to losing weight officially ended around May 1, 2016. I now weigh 143 lbs., with a total 11-month loss of 40 lbs. That's right, I lost a total of 40 POUNDS IN 11 MONTHS with NO EXERCISE and NO EATING OF FOODS I DIDN'T WANT TO EAT. Imagine losing 40 pounds in less than a year, eating only the foods you love. One short year from now you can be looking back at yourself and thinking – that didn't take so long.

I am now maintaining my weight with the lessons I've learned (many from this book), and plan on using these lesson as way to always maintain the ideal weight for my particular body height and makeup. If I can do it, anyone can do it.

A good read, but nothing groundbreaking

There are a lot of books out there about changing habits, improving your life and restructuring things so that you'll be able to control your impulses and urges better. I liked Wansink's style of writing, his anecdotes and the numerous studies that he's done. He is pretty much the definitive expert on consumer behavior, and a lot of books ("Power of Habit", "Switch", "Willpower", etc.) make references to his work.
There's nothing terribly new, although I think this guy was probably the originator of a lot of the progression towards self-help and changing your life books. His stories are quite interesting, but I think it's still not quite so clear how you would go about putting his ideas into practice.
Wansink suggests that we make small changes into our lives, a 100-200 calorie reduction from our diet so that we gradually lose weight without even knowing it. The problem with that is that often 100-200 calories will pop up to take place of the eliminated calorie threat. It's like the Lernaean Hydra--cut off one head and more temptations come in.
I would recommend this book as good general reading, but don't expect it to change your life.

Life changing insights.

I read the Kindle version of this book during lunchbreaks at McDonald's over a period of a few weeks.

Although not a diet book per se, I used the understandings I gained from this book to lose 15 pounds in three months without changing my activity level, only by cutting back on my unnoticed overeating.

Painless way to get back to a better weight, and may provide further incentive to move forward with other changes based upon the empowering feeling of success.

I explained some of what I learned from this book to my wife and she has lost ten pounds WITHOUT READING THE BOOK! It was startling to learn the effect of "one more cookie" or a daily Mocha Frappe when added to an already over-rich calorie count.

The stark contrast between the time required on a treadmill to burn 150 calories compared to the time it takes to eat a 300 calorie glazed donut or add a chocolate milkshake to the burger and fries was the turning point.

A purely informative book, no agenda beyond giving you food for thought. (sorry). Highly recommended.

Very very Passionate!!

This one indeed sizzled and I love sizzle! Max Valland, Lord Roseby began as a brooding , depressed disinherited duke's son. By chance he meets the very beautiful Marietta Greentree, in a hot air balloon ride. She is the daughter of Aphrodite, London's leading courtesan. Since Marietta had been ruined at a young age by a scoundrel who took her virtue and then flees, she believes no man of value will ever want her.

Each time she meets Max, there is something about his brooding manner though that causes her to be drawn to him. Outside of Aphrodite's brothel he is struck down and almost killed. Marietta nurses him back to life. Marietta's plan for her life is to become a courtesan, like her mother. She believes since she has been ruined why not protect herself from the hurt of ever letting any man too close to hurt her again.

Max believes this is the wrong life for Marietta, so he agrees to train her in the ways of passion, in order to prove she is not cut out for life in a brothel. Well the sizzle indeed begins at this point and there are some great love scenes throughout the rest of this book. Max, truly believes the only thing in his life worth anything is now Marietta.

He has a paltry estate on the Cornish coast he intends to retreat to and somehow etch out a life, now that he has been disinherited by his father. Of course Max's life still seems to be endanger from someone. This troubles Marietta as she helps him trap the guilty person. There is also the problem of whether Max is in fact the Duke's real son or not? The danger for Max and the inheritance are both good mysteries and enhance the love story developing between Max and Marietta. Marietta just somehow needs to deal with whether she can allow her heart to feel again, and risk being hurt.

This is a great story between two people that in different ways seem to have lost hope and together they find that they give each other not only love, but hope for a future! Very well written story high on romance and well deserving of five roses.

Captivating all the way to the last word

Rules of Passion possesses everything for a good, satisfying read. This book is sharp and fast-moving. Filled with Lovable characters, exciting and action-mystery twists. Lots of laugh out-loud scenes and oh so plenty of heart warming moments. If you long to be swept into the lives of two enchanting people, I highly recommend this one. The love scenes are ample & steamy, and the plot is a good one. The relationship between Marietta and Max sizzles and there are no misunderstandings that tear the two apart for long periods. Any misunderstandings are dealt with within a few pages and that is very refreshing to this reviewer. Rules of Passion is witty, romantic, has good strong characters and an unexpected ending.

The plot and characters seemed fresh, the pace was quick, and it was a totally engrossing read. Full of enjoyable supporting characters and stories. I love this book. You will feel like smoking after the sex scenes in this book. The relationship between the leads is endearing. The secondary characters are enjoyable as well. This book is sharp and fast-moving. Filled with Lovable and exciting characters. This was a very entertaining book. This book was a pleasure to read and I couldn't put it down until it was finished. I really enjoyed the characters, as they were very likeable. A fast paced book with an intricate plot that I cannot help but enjoy. The interaction between the leads was great. There is enough conflict to make the story line interesting and not so much that your left wondering why they ever got together. This book is sharp and fast-moving. I was sad to have it end, but satisfied at the ending! I can't wait until the next book comes out in the series.

Pleasing Story

This is the second book about the Greentree sisters and is Marietta, the middle sister's story. Marietta and her two sisters were kidnapped from their courtesan mother, Aphrodite and left on the door of Lady Greentree who took them in and raised them as her own. When they are reunited with their real mother years later, Marietta realized she admired Aprodite and would like to be more like her. Marietta is ruined at age 17 by a bounder who promised to marry her but dumped her after taking her virtue. Four years later,convinced that she can never marry, Marietta decides to become a courtesan like her natural mother. When she approaches Aphrodite for help, she tells Marietta that if she can seduce a nobleman, Max Valland-Lord Roseby, Aphrodite will help her become a courtesan.

Max Valland is also surrounded by scandal, he was disinherited after a letter was found that implied he was a bastard. Max meets and is instantly attracted to Marietta. When he is attacked and left for dead, Marietta nurses him back to health and then asks him to help her learn the art of seduction as payment for her help. Max is enchanted, he wants Marietta and she is offering him the perfect oppurtunity. However, he knows he does not want her to become a courtesan, he wants her for himself and plans on making her fall in love with him. Marietta has promised never to fall in love, it is the very first rule of being a courtesan. She has feelings for Max, but knows she can stop before falling in love, right?

This is an amusing story, but it just seems it could have been a little more exciting....Marietta is a little ding batty at times and Max is a little too passive at times. I wish he would have stood up to his family more. However, I still loved the story. I think it just needed a little more depth and tweaking, but still good enough for four stars. Not a bad book at all.
