TRYING TO DO SOMETHING NEW MAKES THE BOOK HARD TO USE

I understand the the author is trying to do something new by melding essays with recipes, but the result is an overwrought, hard to use book.
I liked ( and use) Yockelson's earlier book, Baking by Flavor. That book was well organized and very easy to use, this new one, not so much.

Both the essays and recipe names/descriptions are presented in florid language that just tired me out before I even looked at the recipes
For me, the overwritten essays added nothing, and cute,over the top recipe names like " riot of ingredients break up " and " a 14 year old's rolls still tasty after all these years " told me very little about what I might be making.The book is divided into themes like "dreamyregal" and "contourfanciful" " lushexuberant" and those will not help me use this book. There is just too much cute fluff getting in the way of the recipes.

On the plus side, the book is beautifully designed and the numerous photos are very good, but the whole book is very aggressively PINK and girly.
This might make it even more appealing to some, but it seems to me this is a book destined to be looked at rather than taken into the kitchen and used.
For something more practical and easy to use, try Baking by Flavor.

Beautiful book, recipes don't play out.

I was so excited to get this book for Christmas. After looking at it in the store I had to hold myself back from buying it. It is a beautiful book with many excellent pictures and a little something more in the "baking diary" entries. However, I have made several recipes from the book and not one has turned out. The worst was the brownies I made. The recipe had many steps and used expensive ingredients. I made them exactly as the recipe said (including four hours of refrigeration time) and they turned out as a giant chocolate mushball! I am now afraid to waste time, energy and money on another of these recipes. All style and no substance I guess.

I was given this book as a holiday gift and just tried to use it yesterday. The organization of this book is an absolute nightmare. There is no rhyme or reason to how recipes are ordered and the chapter names just make no sense. What does 'Lush Exuberant' or 'Contour Fanciful' even mean? What kind of things would I find in these chapters? It is confusing to navigate and there is way too much stories and other cutesy stuff which gets in the way of actual recipes. As someone who loves to bake, I just found this book to be a major pain in the ass. If you're looking for something for baking from, find a better book.

Drawing on anthropological methods and theory to illuminate institutional life, she probes the sources of the profound sense of unease she found at the place she calls "The Franklin Nursing Home."

For fourteen months Shield participated in life at a nursing home in the northeastern United States. She got to know many of the people associated with the home―doctors, nurses, custodians, kitchen workers, administrators, social workers, visiting relatives, and above all, the residents, who emerge in this book as the individuals they are. Sections in which the residents speak poignantly in their own voices are woven throughout her richly detailed observations of everyday routines and events. We see them using guile and humor to get by, struggling to approach the end of their lives with a measure of autonomy and dignity, and we meet an often conscientious and caring staff constrained by conflicting professional perspectives and by the bureaucratic structure in which they work.

There are no villains here. Rather, Shield explains how conditions in the nursing home create a difficult and uncomfortable "liminality"―the transition from an accustomed role to a new one-for the residents. In characterizing nursing-home existence, she goes beyond Erving Goffman's classic definition of the "total institution" to show how residents pass from adulthood to death without the comfort of ritual or community support common in rites of passage. In addition to the isolation created by this solitary passage, she finds restrictions on "reciprocity"―the old people are always recipients whose need and obligation to repay are seen as unnecessary and difficult to satisfy. The system encourages their passivity, which deepens their dependency and helps to explain why they are often perceived as children. Offering concrete suggestions for improving the quality of nursing-home life, Uneasy Endings will find a broad audience among those who work with the aged.

Entering a nursing home can be seen as a rite of passage between adulthood and death. It is a rite which, in our society, is often gloomy, lonely, and dehumanizing. Cultural anthropologist Shields observed daily life in a home, located in a Northeastern city, whose primarily Jewish residents are ". . . cared for, nourished, protected, kept from harm and, until the end, from death." More scholarly and somewhat more objective than David Oliver and Sally Tureman's The Human Factor in Nursing Home Care (Haworth, 1988), this book combines interviews with residents and staff and the author's field notes along with analysis of her observations. Jaber Gubrium's Living & Dying at Murray Manor (St. Martin's, 1975) remains the classic study of this genre.

Misinformation mixed with good information

Some of C.W.Allen's information is correct but some was flat wrong. I read the book at author, Robert Kiyosaki's recommendation (Rich Dad, Poor Dad) and because some of what RK implied was offbase about having your corporation pay for your car, house, etc. As a CPA and twenty year veteran of the tax profession, I was curious to read his authority. Some glaring problems: You cannot hire your kids in your corporation and write off their education. The tax statutes are very specific about greater than 10% owners and their closely related family not being eligible. There are several other items like this that contradict Allen's info. Another dislikable characteristic of the book is that it has several sections entirely written by different authors who very clearly did not review each other's material. Several times they covered the same subject with different detail. How can you buy a book that you can't trust?

A good editor was needed....

After carefully reading the other reviews, I ordered this book with mixed expectations. Granted, there were some useful tips that I gleaned; advantages of different corporations, interesting case studies, specific write-offs.
But still, the book is lacking. I learned of this book from "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" so I expected some powerful insight. Why do I think the book falls short? Well, I checked the web site of Sage International, and a lot of the informatin in the book you can get for FREE on the site. Which then lead me to believe that the book was just Sage's promotional material. I began to question the book's objectivity when they recommended Sage several times, and also Kiyosaki's books and products. Cross promotion is fine, but I began to wonder if Kiyosaki isn't a shareholder in Sage. I'm all for capitalism, but I'd like objectivity. Also, the book is very poorly organized. It tells you why you should incorporate, and then gives good specific tax saving examples, and then later tells why you should incorporate again! Information is repeated and repeated. Many pages are filled with a recap of what was covered one page before. It seemed like they took meeting notes and made it a book. I won't even mention the typos. If I made a typo on my tax return, I couldn't get away with it. And I'm supposed to be trusting the information in this book to lead me to financial safety? I wonder. I'll take them up on their advice on double checking with local experts!
However, if you don't know much about the different sorts of businesses. This is a good place to start. It is a quick read, and easy to follow. And there are many good examples. Maybe I was just expecting too much.

Unbelievably disorganized!

I ordered this book after reading the recommendation in "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," and I was terribly disapointed when it arrived. "Inc. & Grow Rich" is the most disorganized book I've ever seen. It's as if the authors just pasted together a series of unrelated presentations -- leaving it to the reader to decipher the important points. I did pick up a couple of new ideas, which is the only reason I didn't rate the book lower. However, I'm now going to have to do some research on my own to find out how to implement them, since the book was too sketchy. To sum it up: save your fifty bucks for something better!

just what I was looking for

I've been doing hair professionally for 7 years, and got this book to better understand all of the chemistry involved. And that's exactly what I got from this book. A nice review of all the stuff I learned in beauty school plus some more in depth information. Goes over what the hair is made of and what chemical changes take place in the hair to make services like coloring and perming possible. Tells you what chemicals make up each product and how they work with the hair. Also lists a lot of common ingredients used in hair products like shampoos and conditioners and what each one is used for. I feel more confident in my understanding of each chemical used for my job.

Wonderfully Illustrated

A comprehensive regional geography textbook used in an undergraduate geography class I just completed this fall (2002). The author along with her son covers just about every country on earth. This book is timely with comments regarding 9/11 and a little bit on the battle with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The illustrations and pictures are excellent, making the study of geography just that much more interesting. With each region she covers she enlists the help of a local specialized geographer. She also covers enviromental, economic, population (density) social, gender as well as other issues. In general a good textbook.

Rudolfo Anaya is professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico. He was one of the first winners of the Premio Quinto Sol National Chicano literary award. Book review for "Bless me Ultima"

"Bless me Ultima" is a wonderful story based on the "Chicano" or Northern New Mexico native people culture, religion, and customs that tells us about the relationship between a six year old boy called Antonio and an Old wise Lady called Ultima who is a "curandera" or healer, and how Anotonio faces a lot of difficulties and has to deal with curses, healings, dead people and mean friends and becomes a man of learning throughout his chilhood with Ultima's help.
Since the author is from Northern New Mexico and the book takes place in two real small villages called Las Pasturas and Puerto de Lunas wich are located North of New Mexico i think Rodulfo Anaya put a little bit of his life experience into the story to remark the origins of a culture that tends to dissapear as new Chicano generations come to this world which makes the book more exciting and more valuable.
I really enjoyed reading this book because i could follow the story very well considering that english is my second languaje and that i'm still having some problems with grammar and sentence structures and because i like reading mythical stories and i'm very familiar with them. Another aspect of this book that i liked and i found familiar was that New Mexican culture and Colombian and Latin Americna culture in general have a lot of things in common such as believing in ghosts, witches, curses, spirits, etc; and that the religion is the same and that there are not really too many differences within it.

Set in NM on the border between a small village and the huge llano (plains), Bless Me, Ultima is Rudolfo Anaya's much acclaimed and award-winning coming-of-age novel from the Hispanic perspective. Antonio is torn betw his father's cowboy side of the family who ride on the llano and his mother's village and farming relations. Many conflicts are presented here: Hispanic vs American culture, Catholicism vs paganism, parents' expectations vs the child's desires, Spanish blood vs native blood.
Antonio's life is forever altered when his aunt Ultima, a curandera (healer) comes to live with the family; she teaches Antonio many things, most importantly how to gather the self-knowledge that will help carry him into adulthood.

A poignant coming-of-age story....

I have just finished reading Bless Me, Ultima in my English class and I can say that it is a good choice.
The book is about a young Mexican boy, Antonio Marez, growing up in New Mexico during the mid 1940s. It begins when he is six years old, and Ultima, a curandera or healing woman, comes to live with his family because she is getting too old to live by herself. Through Ultima's gentle guidance and support, Antonio faces his uncertainties and learns to go on with life.
Antonio's parents are opposites, his father being a Marez, people of the llano (the desert land in New Mexico), and his mother being a Luna, farmers and people of the moon and the earth. His father wants Antonio to grow up free to roam the land and become a vaquero, as he once was. His mother wants Antonio to be a priest, a man of learning. Antonio is torn between them regarding his future.
Throughout the story, Antonio also faces confusion over religion and spirituality. Ultima believes in God, but she also believes and works magic. But there is no evil in Ultima and Antonio is confused over Catholicism. His mother wants him to become a priest, and though he does believe in God, he wants understanding from Him, answers to his many questions.
From a very young age, Antonio witnesses death. Death of a war-crazed man, Lupito. Death of a good family friend, Narcisco. And finally the unjust death of Ultima, killed by an evil man vowing revenge on Ultima for the death of his two daughters who were brujas (witches).
Through the trials he is faced with and the death of his beloved mentor, Ultima, Antonio learns to go on with life and leave the past behind. He realizes the power of good over evil and understands that truth is more powerful than that which is prescribed by custom.
A lot of what goes through Antonio's mind through the story is similar to the questions I have had through growing up. I can relate to him and to the other characters in the book. And I have learned that mankind is no different in spite of age, race, religion, culture, and upbringing.
Kudos to Rudolfo Anaya for his first novel that brings Mexican-American culture to the reader and a genuinely poignant "growing up" story that can be read by all ages.
