Blue Talk and Love, by Mecca Jamilah Sullivan

Blue Talk and Love’s "voice, despite material that seems frankly contemporary, is paradoxically lyrical, nearly Faulknerian." --Rick Moody, judge for the American Short Fiction Short Story Contest Blue Talk and Love tells the stories of girls and women of color navigating the moods and mazes of urban daily life. Set in various enclaves of New York City — including the middle-class Hamilton Heights section of Harlem, the black queer social world of the West Village, the Spanish-speaking borderland between Harlem and Washington Heights, and historic Tin Pan Alley — the collection uses magic realism, historical fiction, satire and more to highlight young black women's inner lives. The storylines range widely: a big-bodied teenage girl from Harlem discovers her sexuality in the midst of racial tensions at her Upper East Side school; four young women from Newark, New Jersey, are charged with assaulting the man who threatens to rape them; a pair of conjoined black female twins born into slavery, make their fame as stage performers in the Big City. In each story, the characters push past what is expected of them, learning to celebrate their voices and their lives. "Sullivan’s prose shocks, intrigues, and transports us through fourteen artful and unique stories. And so do her rich and inimitable characters, most of them young black women struggling in a world they did not make but one they must confront, tear down, and remake. Black girls matter and Sullivan shows us just how much." -- Cheryl Clarke, author of Narratives: Poems in the Tradition of Black Women

Mecca Jamilah Sullivan is in love with the strangeness of people
By Annie Liontas
Mecca Jamilah Sullivan is in love with the strangeness of people. In her collection, Blue Talk and Love—whose title, I’m told, is inspired by an Earth Wind and Fire song—she writes about inner-lives and breaking points.

For example In “Wolf Pack,” Mecca writes for each of the voices of the New Jersey Four, women who received prison sentences for Felony Gang Assault after a man threatened to rape them.

In “A Strange People,” Mecca writes about a set of female conjoined twins, born into slavery. This story appears in All About Skin and has been described by Junot Diaz as “electrifying and absolutely necessary.”

Here’s a clip of it, and you can hit up the rest at The Feminist Wire.

We-Chrissie is an all-star bally, has always been. She preened and flaunted in her story too, playing our difference up and down like a yo-yo tossed to thrill a child. First it was a “malformation,” then it was a “joy.” Our join was a curse we were proud of, she said, painting on our minds the paradox of our body.

In her scholarly life, Mecca writes about sexuality, blackness, big bodies, and the politics and poetics of the most popular line that Biggie never wrote.

But what I love about Mecca’s fiction is that, not unlike James Baldwin, while her writing has a political agenda, it lives.

Powerful short story collection for women everywhere
By Stephanie Jane
I chose Blue Talk And Love almost entirely because of Mirlande Jean-Gilles's stunning cover image. The black woman proudly facing out shows exactly what this story collection is about. Fourteen short stories portray lives of black women in America, primarily contemporary New York. I didn't know what to expect having not read any of Sullivan's work before, and so was pleasantly surprised by the book. Her grasp of character is brilliant and the women fairly leapt off the page into my imagination. Some of the speech took a bit of working out, but the atmosphere of each story came across convincingly and I loved picturing the locations and people in my mind.

Sullivan includes a wide sweep of women within her tales and I was particularly taken by the historical story of conjoined twins We-Chrissie and We-Millie. Their struggle from slavery through freak-shows and a kind of fame, to dwindling popularity and uncertainty about their future is sensitively written and emotionally moving. I also liked the quiet desperation of Dominique and her family in the story Adale. Driven out of their home by rising rents, pregnant Dominique, her mother and her son are facing a new life away from the support of their friends and church group. Told against the backdrop of news reports of the 2005 tsunami, I liked how Sullivan contrasted that swift devastation of towns and lives with the slower but equally relentless destruction and rebuilding of Dominique's district as new money moves in. Dominique's donation to the Somalian victims of the tsunami - an imaginable horror - was emotional. Other stories tackle issues of weight and body image, gender identity and artistic integrity - as I type this I've just remembered the story Ruidos which could make a thoughtful bridge from the Kasuo Ishiguro story collection Nocturnes.

I hope Blue Talk And Love won't be sidelined as being of minority interest. The first stories feature lesbian characters and I think Riverdale Avenue is an LGBT publisher, but this is not a book of stories about gender identity or about race. It is an interesting collection that I think will resound with women of any colour worldwide.

By S. Shaw
Blue Talk and Love is a collection of short stories that immerse the reader in the complex and beautiful lives of young, urban black and brown mostly queer women. We see intimacies that are rarely seen by the outsider, the reader is given a look behind the faade of everyday reality to see just what motivates and drives these amazing characters. Must reading for students of queer/lesbian studies; in a male-focused world it is good to read about female characters that are well drawn, multi-faceted and so life-like you feel their joys and pains.

For Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Torah is at once the oldest and the most contemporary document directing human lives. In this highly acclaimed, five-volume parashat hashavua series, Rabbi Riskin helps each reader extract deeply personal, contemporary lessons from the traditional biblical biblical accounts. As Rabbi Riskin writes in the introduction to Torah Lights, “The struggle with Torah reflects the struggle with life itself. The ability of the Torah to speak to every generation and every individual at the same time is the greatest testimony to its divinity.”

A rabbi covers many interesting subjects in Exodus
By Israel Drazin
This is the second of so-far three volumes in which Rabbi Shlomo Riskin offers his views on the Torah. Readers may want to look at my review of his first volume, on Bereshit, to find out about Rabbi Riskin and his accomplishments. In this second volume, he offers from six to nine short incisive thought-provoking commentaries on each of the ten biblical portions that are read in synagogues from the book of Exodus, called Shemot in Hebrew. The essays generally combine a relevant and traditional approach to the Bible with many references to current events and time-honored and long-established Bible commentaries. He offers incisive answers to many interesting questions.

He points out in his introduction that Maimonides felt that the first book of the Bible, Genesis, is Scripture's most important volume because it teaches that humans are created in the divine image, meaning that they have intelligence, and it urges people to use their intelligence. Maimonides also read into Genesis that every person, no matter what his or her religion, is a creation of God and must be respected and treated properly. However Rabbi Riskin prefers the view of the poet Yehuda HaLevi who felt that the most important book is Exodus because it speaks of the story of the birth of Israel.

Rabbi Riskin discusses many subjects. For example, in his first essay, he points out how important women are in Judaism. They hold the family together and help Judaism survive. Pharaoh made a strategic mistake when he told two women to kill all the Israelite males; he would have been more successful in exterminating the Israelites if had he tried to kill the females. Also, tradition states that the two women to whom he assigned this murder were Israelites, and they didn't carry out his instructions.

In another discussion, he tells why God appeared to Moses in a non-extinguished fire in a thorn bush. What do the burning fire and lowly thorn bush signify? Do they have meaning for us today? Does every rabbi agree what these items mean? Do they tell us something about God or how people relate to God?

Rabbi Riskin explores a host of other subjects, such as the following: What do the various names of God signify? Are they actually God's names, or are they relating something about how God acts? Why was Moses reluctant to accept God's mission? Can a prophet refuse to do what God commands? Who really hardened Pharaoh's heart? Did God make him do something bad? When should a person pray and when act instead? What do we mean by the concept of a chosen people? Who is a Jew? What is more important, the people or God? What is the Jewish view of abortion? What were the cherubs placed on the ark? May Jews count people? How should we handle the uncertainties of life?

Thus, as we can see, Rabbi Riskin covers many interesting subjects, and he does it well.

For those who enjoy reading endlessly about Rape.
By sgunn
This book... I can't even. There were so many times I just wanted to quit, but I had this crazy little idea in my head that it would get better. I'll not be making that mistake again.

The most important thing you should know about this little gem is that I don't think I've ever read a story where rape is mentioned more, or a character is nearly raped in such excess. Seriously, it made me throw s***. I'll break this down for you, seeing as I marked almost every occurrence. You may also need to get a friend because you will surely run out of fingers and toes if you're counting along at home!

Christina is kidnapped for leverage against her family by Michael, a mercenary for a secret organization of fellow mercenaries called the IMA. He has her for about a month or two and threatens to rape or considers raping her no less than 5 times.

Then in a game of politics, another rival mercenary steals her away from Michael and threatens to rape her about 3 or 4 times.

Michael comes to get her back because, gosh!, he maybe has feelings for her, and they both get held captive. He then intimidates her into thinking he might possibly rape her 2 more times to get her to follow his plans to keep them alive. While both are captive, aforementioned rival mercenary threatens her with rape twice as well, but see, the difference is he means it!

Up to this point, poor Christina has been appalled or terrified with these rape threats/attempts. However, upon their escape from a prison island, she strikes a deal with Michael that if he helps save her parents from the same prison, she will give him what he wants... her body. They free her parents and escape on a boat.

Whilst traveling the coast by said boat, Michael decides it's time for her to settle the deal, but Christina is appalled and refuses. That night, he gets in her bed, and although she doesn't want to because she is all confused about her feelings for Michael, she doesn't say no, and let's him take her virginity. She does cry during the whole thing and call him a monster afterwards, though.

They get to his apartment in Seattle, and there is a lot of do I/don't I have feelings for him/her, as well as a few more shady scenarios of him almost forcing himself on her because he just can't resist her. But see, he LOVES HER now. (At this point I'm banging my head against a wall repeatedly)

But, surprise! The rival mercenary has taken over the IMA and takes Christina, making Michael come get his one true love. While waiting for Micheal to arrive, rival mercenary threatens to rape her a handful of times, and cuts her clothes/her and is on top of her bleeding body when Michael arrives. Oh the horror Micheal feels not knowing if the rival mercenary raped his Christina!!!

Rival mercenary lets them both go under the condition that Michael works for him now. Michael cleans her wounds and then leaves in the morning. The one person he trusts in the whole world shows up to give Christina Micheal's goodbye letter (two sentences) and takes her to find her parents. Christina maybe-possibly loves Micheal back now. THE END!

worth the price and then some

Ok I sat on this review for a few days because I have a tendency to look back a few days later and think gosh that book wasn't as great as I thought or on rare occasions better than I originally thought. Cloak and Dagger is turning out to be one of those rare occasions where I'm like "man I really loved that book" though I think I got my star rating correct first go. I just finished another book that I didn't particularly like and all I could think was gosh I miss Michael, maybe not the sanest feeling, but I mean seriously come on he's so freaking hott he could kidnap me any day. I hate sappy books so it was refreshing to read this after reading so many other bad books. I love that the author doesn't try to portray him as anything other than himself and that she didn't cut his (well you know) off and give them to Christina. Speaking of Christina, I did find her a bit annoying towards the end I mean come on you know you're in love with the guy just like we do so get over yourself but hey I still enjoyed her as a character. Overall good job Ms. Campbell on giving me the breath of fresh air I so desperately needed

C&D is a romantic thriller that is definitely NOT for everyone. If you like traditional sweet romances or heroes that deep down are basically good, moral, decent upstanding men...then look elsewhere. If however you enjoy dark, morally ambiguous heroes who have done some genuinely bad things but have enough of a soul or shred of conscience left that they are capable of redemption...then you just hit the Mother lode.

These are the type of stories that I enjoy the most and it is very hard to find the "real thing". In my quest I have been the victim of many a "bait and switch" scam where the hero turns out to have been wrongfully imprisoned, or actually NOT guilty of the bad reputation or working for some sort of government sanctioned agency for the good of national security which actually makes him the GOOD guy.

Not C&D. This is the real deal...FINALLY!!! The hero Michael, was recruited as a teenager from a gang and works for the IMA, which is described as "a group of mercenaries trained like soldiers with the moral code of assassins". Michael tortures people for information and then kills them and comes back covered in blood that isn't his own and the author shows this. The author also shows us that he has a shred of conscience left by contrasting his methods to those of his counterpart. Michael prefers to use "scare tactics and mild physical assault" he notes he tends to get "better results with the threat of torture rather than the actual act itself". Unlike his comrade Callaghan who has elevated torture and rape to an art form that brings him supreme satisfaction sexual and otherwise and leaves his captives so broken that they will tell him anything he wants to hear just to get him to stop.

C&D is the story of the beginning of Michael's redemption when he falls in love with his hostage and for the first time in his life experiences the desire to put someone else's life above his own. As a love story it is very realistically done, which means it is extremely slow to develop and by the end of the book Christina isn't at all sure about what she feels for him other than to know that she doesn't entirely still hate him. She has seen his vulnerability, she has seen the shred of conscience inside him spark, she is beginning to believe that he really does love her and she is beginning to have feelings for him - which are so hard for her to reconcile given that he has so many times done such very bad things, and given that some of those very bad things have been done to her.

I thought C&D was a thoroughly enjoyable story with very realistic relationship development. If there was not another installment I would have marked it down a star for cheating me of a HEA but I cannot wait to start Armed & Dangerous and I am over the moon to know that a 3rd installment is also promised. To the author...trilogies are overdone. You need to keep going!

Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Antifragile is a standalone book in Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s landmark Incerto series, an investigation of opacity, luck, uncertainty, probability, human error, risk, and decision-making in a world we don’t understand. The other books in the series are Fooled by Randomness, The Black Swan, and The Bed of Procrustes.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the bestselling author of The Black Swan and one of the foremost thinkers of our time, reveals how to thrive in an uncertain world.

Just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension, and rumors or riots intensify when someone tries to repress them, many things in life benefit from stress, disorder, volatility, and turmoil. What Taleb has identified and calls “antifragile” is that category of things that not only gain from chaos but need it in order to survive and flourish.

In The Black Swan, Taleb showed us that highly improbable and unpredictable events underlie almost everything about our world. In Antifragile, Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner. The antifragile is beyond the resilient or robust. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better and better.

Furthermore, the antifragile is immune to prediction errors and protected from adverse events. Why is the city-state better than the nation-state, why is debt bad for you, and why is what we call “efficient” not efficient at all? Why do government responses and social policies protect the strong and hurt the weak? Why should you write your resignation letter before even starting on the job? How did the sinking of the Titanic save lives? The book spans innovation by trial and error, life decisions, politics, urban planning, war, personal finance, economic systems, and medicine. And throughout, in addition to the street wisdom of Fat Tony of Brooklyn, the voices and recipes of ancient wisdom, from Roman, Greek, Semitic, and medieval sources, are loud and clear.

Antifragile is a blueprint for living in a Black Swan world.

Erudite, witty, and iconoclastic, Taleb’s message is revolutionary: The antifragile, and only the antifragile, will make it.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, December 2012: Fragile things break under stress. But, according to Nassim Nicholas Taleb, there's an entire class of other things that don't simply resist stress but actually grow, strengthen, or otherwise gain from unforeseen and otherwise unwelcome stimuli. Taleb sees degrees of antifragility everywhere, from fasting, mythology, and urban planning to economic, technological, cultural, and biological systems. The wealth of radical thinking in this book astounds; the glossary alone offered more thought-provoking ideas than any other nonfiction book I read this year. That said, Antifragile is far from flawless. As comical as Taleb's rough handling of his favorite targets can be--academics, economists, and tourists, to name a few--his argumentative style boasts gaping holes, non sequiturs aplenty, and at times an almost willfully repugnant tone. Some readers will find Taleb's brashness off-putting; others will embrace it as a charismatic component of the ideas themselves. Either way, no one will finish this book unchanged. --Jason Kirk

From Booklist
Judging by his anecdotes, Taleb interacts with the economic masters of the universe as he jets from New York to London or attends business-politics confabs in Davos, Switzerland. Anything but awed by them, Taleb regards them as charlatans, not as credible experts. Such skepticism toward elites, which imbued Taleb’s The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable (2007), continues in this work, which grapples with a concept Taleb coins as “antifragile.” Not readily reducible to a definition (Taleb takes the whole book to develop the idea), suffice to say here that antifragile’s opposites—economic, political, or medical systems that are vulnerable to sudden collapse—tend to be managed by highly educated people who think they know how systems work. But they don’t, avers Taleb. Their confidence in control is illusory; their actions harm rather than help. In contrast, Taleb views decentralized systems—the entrepreneurial business rather than the bureaucratized corporation, the local rather than the central government—as more adaptable to systemic stresses. Emphatic in his style and convictions, Taleb grabs readers given to musing how the world works. --Gilbert Taylor

“[Taleb] writes as if he were the illegitimate spawn of David Hume and Rev. Bayes, with some DNA mixed in from Norbert Weiner and Laurence Sterne. . . . Taleb is writing original stuff—not only within the management space but for readers of any literature—and . . . you will learn more about more things from this book and be challenged in more ways than by any other book you have read this year. Trust me on this.”—Harvard Business Review

“By far my favorite book among several good ones published in 2012. In addition to being an enjoyable and interesting read, Taleb’s new book advances general understanding of how different systems operate, the great variation in how they respond to unthinkables, and how to make them more adaptable and agile. His systemic insights extend very well to company-specific operational issues—from ensuring that mistakes provide a learning process to the importance of ensuring sufficient transparency to the myriad of specific risk issues.”—Mohamed El-Erian, CEO of PIMCO, Bloomberg

As always, an imperfect, infuriating but intriguing book
By Alfred LEUNG
1 Summary
----------
1.1 Introduction
==========
Taleb conveniently quotes one of his friend's summary of this book: "Everything gains or loses from volatility. Fragility is what loses from volatility and uncertainty."

I think the point is better expressed by rephrasing: "Antifragility is what gains from volatility and uncertainty, up to a point. And being antifragile is a good thing."

Well, that's pretty much summarizes this 500-pages-long book. The rest is an accumulation of more or less relevant topics, delivered in Taleb's trademarked seering, holier-than-thou, hero-or-moron style. Why, even in "Dynamic hedging", his first, $100-book on trading exotic options, he was already both immensely entertaining and almost unbearably infuriating.

1.2 A few of the more interesting points:
=========================

1.2.1 Every phenomenon in the world belongs to one of the following categories:
Fragile: vulnerable to unforeseen shocks
Robust: indifferent to shocks
Antifragile: thrive on shocks, up to a point.
That's what Taleb calls the Triad.

1.2.2 Most modern structures are inherently fragile
Salaried employment: while it looks safe on the surface (predictable salary every month) it is subject to the catastrophic risk of losing one's job.
Debt-fueled economies: debt has no flexibility, so these economies can't stand even a slowdown without risking implosion (cf current situation)
Modern societies: efficiency demands are pushing the structures to the maximum, so a little sand in the cogs make the whole edifice totter.
Touristification: turning adventures (kids growing up, people visiting foreign countries) from exciting, dangerous activities into bland, Disneyfied and safe ones.

1.2.3 Ways to be antifragile include:
Stressors: it is healthy to be subject to some punctual stresses to awake the organism from complacency (e.g. irregular meal times, violent exercise or ingesting small amounts of poison)
Barbell strategy: put 90% of your eggs into something super-safe and be very risk-seeking with the other 10% (swing for the fences).
Optionality: get into situations where downside is limited but upside is unlimited (non-linearity)
Redundancy: have more than one way to have things done.
Less is more: don't add unnecessary things.
Tinkering: empiricism is better than top-down academic research
Small is beautiful: large organizations are inherently fragile, but small structures are well adapted to be nimble and profit from unexpected opportunities.

1.2.4 For small troubles, better trust nature and do nothing than bring untested methods that can have tragic unforeseen consequence
Beware of neomania: don't embrace novelty for the sake of it
Stick to time-tested methods: what has stood the test of time has proved to be robust
Don't sweat the small stuff if it can lead to tragedy: radiation used to cure acne leading to leukemia, thalidomide prescribed to reduce morning sickness leading to malformed babies.

1.2.5 An antidote to the lack of accountability seen in the powerfuls who rule us (government officials, corporate honchos, bankers)
Have them have skin in the game, i.e. to share in the downside of their decisions. Taleb quotes the 3000-year-old+ Hammurabi code, "eye for an eye, teeth for a teeth."

2 Review
---------
So, what's the score? As with his other books, I found myself reading every page the first 40-50 pages, then turning the pages faster and faster as the neat, amusing prose turns into Fidel Castro-style interminable ramblings, hyperboles and inaccuracies, annoying personal anecdotes, and worst of all, the silly little tales with his imaginary heroes Nero Tulip and Fat Tony (Tulip seems to be some kind of idealized version of Taleb himself). One or two hours for the first third, 40 minutes for the second and 15 minutes for the last.
And I'll spare (or maybe not) the "very technical" appendix 2 with its silly little formula he seems to be so proud of. Thanks for teaching us high-school math about convexity (Jensen inequality as if it were rocket science? Come on!)

The basic point is sound however: we sure all need a bit more antifragility in our lives.
If we only ditched what is unnecessary (going to the doctor for trivial stuff, seeking novelty for the sake of it, buying stuff we don't need), we'd have gone a long way toward being more robust.
But going beyond that is more problematic: Taleb waxed lyrical about the upside of antifragility, but he says nothing about its cost.
And seeing how he came to his idea from the world of options trading, it looks dishonest. In options trading, when you buy and option and get all the good stuff associated with it (unlimited upside, limited downside), the flipside is that it costs money everyday (time decay). Spending all your time buying options is quite a good way to the poorhouse.
As in the financial world, so in the real world, unless you're talking about "free optionality" (the people who don't have skin in the game that Taleb reviles). Maybe being a free agent beats being an office drone because one doesn't need to fear getting fired, but what about the daily stress of needing to go out and find work without any certainty to get it? That's a cost that's a bit too high for probably most people.

In conclusion, this is an imperfect, overlong and often eye-roll-inducing book (as is usual for Taleb), but it presents an intriguing and original argument for the reader to chew on.

Enjoyable; but Reading "Black Swan" First is Essential
By Hans Gruber
Taleb writes in a sensational style. Although he could write in more academic prose, I suppose that would greatly reduce the market of potential readers. Still, his style is as another reviewer aptly put it: "hero or moron"- in this sense Taleb is rather myopic and has no fear of announcing to the world who he considers a moron. This is refreshing in "Black Swan", but gets a bit tiresome in "Antifragile." At times, it almost gets a little desperate.

Taleb has some fantastic perspectives and a colorful, highly engaging way of using metaphors and stories to weave his arguments. Most of the time, I enjoy it. He is spot-on with his thesis that "antifragile" is the opposite of fragile, and that 'robust' is just not enough. To become 'antifragile' has to do with adaptation, emergence, and viewing things holistically instead of in a reductionist or linear causality/path dependency manner.

To get into a few details here that I took from this book; Taleb has one interesting theme here where I cannot help but think that his love of history and ancient philosophy impacts his position. Taleb argues that anything that is extremely old is most likely "antifragile" because it continues to exist in some form. Granted, Taleb is not talking about a wheel from ancient Greece that still works today...it is the concept of a wheel that continues to endure (for example). Thus, old things are antifragile, and new things risk being fragile. The problem with this position is one of being paradoxical to emergence....there are many "paradigm shifts" (see Kuhn's book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" if you are unfamiliar- it is a vital concept for this topic) where we do not see the "black swan" until it has occured and radically changed the playing field. I have issues with a conflict of concepts where the old paradigm (the ancient, and often the "antifragile") is shattered by the black swan event (paradigm shift) which replaces the old with a new, likely antifragile construct. This paradox plays throughout Taleb's book, unlike "The Black Swan" where there is no significant paradox in logic.

Lastly, Taleb has many interesting references and concepts he provides to enrich his argument. Notably, he cites Terence Kealey's "the Economic Laws of Scientific Research"...very nice to see the level of research and thought Taleb put into this, and the strength in argument overall.

Eureka, something to chew on (mentally speaking)
By Roger Carlsen
One of my three favorite books of the summer.
The concept of antifragile is amazing. It will provide the more random areas of your life with a justification that may not exist. Although Taleb builds on earlier books regarding randomness and black swans, the content of this book can easily stand by itself. I should warn you though, if you are like me, I went back and bought several of his earlier books.

I read the kindle version and listened the it on Audible too. The only thing I did not like about this was that the Kindle version did not have page numbers in it unlike many current Kindle books. This is not Kindle's fault. I did love the way that the reader in Audible read the references as part of the text. Readers so often overlook footnotes and references.

Reading on Kindle was fabulous. The ability to link references and people makes the reading a better experience.

Okay, if you are going to read this book please extend the experience. Think YouTube too. Here's an example of what I mean - http://youtu.be/_MYTFWCbDKQ. If you watch this you'll see how much extended value there can be in this kind of activity. Okay, I know what you're thinking, you think you can just go to YouTube and watch. Of course you can. Be the book is better and the book will help you become selective.

Two last things:
1) successful fragilistas won't like Taleb - but they too should know his messages.
2) some of his behavior will appear pompous and arrogant. So what, it is the content and if his personality turns you off during interviews and presentations, read the book. His content to too good to miss.

Now, if you care, my two other favorites for this summer were, "A fighting Chance" and "the Goldfinch". I wonder what Mr. Taleb would think of being in this group?
