A Math Primer which has passed the test of time

The original edition was published in March 1937, and the present version is "updated" no more than necessary to remain accessible. Although it spans the essential concepts of basic mathematics from number systems to calculus, it embeds these in historical context that takes the chill edge off the schoolroom's stark exposure to ideas that startle the mind at first. At ten years old, I enjoyed its 1965 resurgence, which undoubtedly paved the way for my eventual Ph.D. in physics. But the book wasn't written for physicists or math-whiz wannabees. It was written for "the Million" -- the hoards of civilized men and women who benefited little from classroom math instruction and now feel the loss. Its continued popularity (or marketability, at any rate) testify to the skill with which Hogben has made the supposedly arcane both accessible and comfortable.

An old friend comes back

I have the French translation of this book, dated 1947. It has notes in the margins from 3 generations of readers. The pages are now very yellow (post-war paper was not very good) so I am very pleased to see a recent edition.
It is one of these rare books that read like a novel. The book covers the history of the kind of math one learns nowadays in high school. It is presented in a very logical way and it is really an easy read.
For the many people who need math with a little bit of flesh, i.e. a reason for a discovery or an equation, it is perfect.
Of course the human mind does not always functions like that, and many mathematical discoveries were made without any "need" or any "reason" at all. If you want to read an historian interested in the story of the mathematical mind, you should read the delightful (but not simple) Wilbur Knorr The Evolution of the Euclidean Elements: A Study of the Theory of Incommensurable Magnitudes and its Significance for Early Greek Geometry
Lancelot Hogben was an interesting man, check him on Wikipedia. He wrote this introduction to math to give anybody a real access to basic math, and he did that successfully for the last 75 years.

Noam Chomsky recommended this book to me. Seriously! What a gem, people don't write like this anymore. Sad but Hogben is another marginalized genius lost through time, replaced by people of much lesser means and greater exposure.

This book from the ACSM is EXCELLENT for preparing for the Certified Exercise Physiologist exam from the ACSM.

This book is laid out exactly like the test with the chapters of the book being laid out like the percentages of information that will be on the exam.

Frogs was produced in 405 BCE, shortly after the deaths of Sophocles and Euripides. Dionysus, the patron god of theater, journeys to the underworld to retrieve Euripides. There he is recruited to judge a contest between the traditional Aeschylus and the modern Euripides, a contest that yields both sparkling comedy and insight on ancient literary taste. In Assemblywomen Athenian women plot to save Athens from male misgovernance. They transfer power to themselves and institute a new social order in which all inequalities based on wealth, age, and beauty are eliminated—with raucously comical results. The gentle humor and straightforward morality of Wealth made it the most popular of Aristophanes' plays from classical times to the Renaissance. Here the god Wealth is cured of his blindness; his newfound ability to distinguish good people from bad brings playfully portrayed social consequences.

As with the three previous volumes, Henderson has edited the Greek text anew, and provided a useful and lively translation. Each play features a general introduction containing a plot summary and discussion of major themes, a note on the text, and a list of major annotated editions...In just over four years Henderson has edited and translated the four volumes of the new Loeb edition of Aristophanes. Every volume is well edited, succinctly annotated, and so translated as to engage the reader in the humor and seriousness of the comedies. It is likely there will be more readers studying Aristophanes rather than fewer ones with the publication of this final volume. (Carl Anderson Scholia Reviews 2003-01-01)

An excellent translation of Aristophanes' finest works

This book, the fourth in Dr. Henderson's fine series of parallel translations, is perhaps the best of the series, containing as it does the comic masterpiece "Frogs," in my opinion the finest of Aristophanes' works. Henderson's translations are crisp, clear, and hilarious, and his extensive use of vulgarity is always textually and philologically sound (as a few comparisons of Liddell-Scott and the OED will surely reveal). In short, it is the definitive edition of Aristophanes' works, and the only translation accurate enough to be worth having on your bookshelf (and believe me, I've read quite a few).

This salty 'Frogs' has got legs

I had to read 'Frogs' for school, all the translations I'd found were awful, then I stumbled upon Mr. Henderson's translation and hit the jackpot. No Dryasdust prissiness here, the language is earthy and accessible, and the scholarly footnotes are also very well done.

Outstanding book

Yes, Aristophanes was a genius in using satire to sting the then politicians. Oh! How we could we use his abilities today in the US!
I highly recommend this (and other similar) books to anyone who likes or loves to read excellent books with morals.
With this book I now have all of Aristophanes's plays to read over and over to my grandchildren, who love them. Thank you.

Another mediocre Microsoft Fundamentals book

This book was helpful in passing the exam, but I would discourage anyone from using this as their sole study material for the test. Though the test is not extremely difficult, this book does not contain the answers to everything that you will be tested on.

I passed my first try on this. I read the whole book and watched the Microsoft Virtual Academy videos. Then, I hand keyed every key term at the beginning of each lesson (160+ terms), which I then converted to note cards and drilled continuously. There are few hands on examples throughout the book like setting IE web content zones and doing some group policy/Active Directory things that I'd recommend trying out. I'm not sure I could have passed without the book.

Pretty close to an all inclusive book for the exam. The questions in the chapters are significantly different from the test though. The material though is spot on.
