This book is mis-titled

I've been using Dreamweaver for about 6 years, and also started doing ColdFusion development for a little over a year. I happened to come across this book only by accident when doing a search at the library for subjects related to SQL (database for backend development). I checked this book out figuring that it probably had a chapter or two related to backend development work. Surprise, surprise. Over half the book is dedicated to building database driven web sites.
If anyone is a believer is utilizing a good backend to power your web pages, it's me, but to call this book a BEGINNERS GUIDE is truly a disservice. The problem with books written by most APPLICATION DEVELOPERS (which this is) is that they tend to forget the core audience will most likely be coming from a ZERO KNOWLEDGE base. This is definitely the case here, where over half the book is dedicated to building database driven websites and technology explanations on how to achieve that. Unfortunately it does so at the expense of truly being a BEGINNER'S GUIDE, by quickly touching on topics that would be better explained, both in words and pictures.
As a reference book for getting some basic skills on doing appliction development work, it's admittedly not bad. BUT, if you're a beginner hoping to learn Dreamweaver from the ground up and to start building web pages utilizing the many tools that Dreamweaver has to offer, there are better books to be had.

This book contains a lot of info but it is not a beginner's book into the world of creating web sites - but a beginner's book into this particular version of Dreamweaver, despite what the "Who should buy this book" paragraph says.
I also found the descriptions of some of the procedures was not explained as well as they could be.

A thorough and well written introduction to Dreamweaver MX. Explain meny terms that might be useful for beginners and that help you to "see the whole picture". Great section on Dynamic websites, with walk throug examples.
One of the better IT books that I have got my hans on so far.....

Linda V. Berens Linda V. Berens, Ph.D. is the Director and Founder of Interstrength Associates, which provides organizational consulting. She is the author of Understanding Yourself and Others, an Introduction to Temperament, among other titles and numerous training materials. As an organizational development consultant, she applies systems thinking and understanding individual differences to solving organizational problems. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Educational Psychologist, and has over thirty-five years experience using temperament and type with individuals and teaching these theories to professionals. Linda is recognized internationally for her contributions to the field of psychological type, for integrating temperament and Jung's typology, and for developing user friendly training materials for practical application of those theories. Dario Nardi Dario Nardi, Ph.D. teaches social science and computing at the University of California (Los Angeles) in the Human Complex Systems degree program. He has been working with type and temperament since 1992, and has been intimately involved in innovative product development with Interstrength Associates. He is the author of various books including 8 Keys to Self-Leadership and Multiple Intelligences and Personality Type. Dario received his degree in systems science from S.U.N.Y. not shooting at the moon

The classification of temperament is as at least two millenia old. Some of this effort falls decidely in the the half-baked side of the pan. Yet much of it is decidely helpful in understanding 'the way we are wired' and 'the way we process things', to use two very modern metaphors of personality typing.

Maybe you've never thought of it like that.

Linda Berens and Dario Nardi want you to think again, and to discover yourself in the profiles they've developed and invited you to try on. Their paradigm is the well-known Myers-Briggs assignment of four letters to a temperament, each of them a choice between two options. If you run the math, you'll quickly discover that there are sixteen possibilities, thus the title of this book. (Full disclosure: I'm an INTJ, so I'm really enjoying systematically reporting on this book, gentle reader.)

Berens and Nardi have made this guide user friendly and it is not necessary to have taken the Myers-Briggs 'test' in order to use it. In my opinion, the reader will greatly benefit from having done so. There are so many 'hooks' that one finds to hang one's temperament on in just about any prose description, that I find the M-B system is almost necessary in order to inject some element of objectivity into the process.

The great value of Berens' and Nardi's work is their trademarked (yes) two-word description of each of the sixteen types (INTJ: 'Conceptualizer Director') *and* the one-page 'Self-Portrait: What's it like to be you?'.

The latter is distilled from interviews with individuals belonging to each personality type. I have checked this against a number of friends in the presence of family and peers and found an extraordinary degree of confirmation that this is how the typed individuals actually feel about the world and their selves in it.

This book could serve as good introduction to the modern practice of temperament/personality classification. I also find it helpful in a business/organization context, where mutual understanding (without the touchy-feely excesses that lead so predictably to the gag reflex) is often essential to accomplishing shared goals and avoiding hallway assassinations.

Review - 16 Personality Types by L.V. Berens

I have most of the books probably published on the Myers Briggs Persoanlity Types and explanations. But, the book by Linda Berens, while each type is covered in a short space and not as in depth as many, did an excellent job of giving the salient points for each type. It is probably the best organized book on the 16 types, and the best general description and discussion of each. I found it an easy read and for people new to this process, the very best overview I have read. It is an excellent book to recommend to 'beginners' in unstanding the "Types", and the reader can go to other books for more in depth discussions if they choose. But, this book is the best one for new readers in the subject. It is now one of my favorites on Types and I have already recommended it to several people. Jim Stitley 8/9/2005

Twist is the second and I believe final book in the Loop series. I have been looking forward to reading Twist ever since I read Loop last year and I really had a blast. I'm glad it's a duology but I would not have been upset if this was trilogy just because I really did grow attatched to the characters. Seriously if you love time travel and sci-fi books check this series out it definitely deserves a lot more attention.

The book had even more action then the last, it was just non-stop one thing after the next and I loved it. It was never boring and yes there are several timelines and multiple changes being made to the timelines and different versions of Bree and other characters popping up from the future and the past but as crazy as it all seems just like the first book Akins did a great job in not confusing the reader and it was all very easy to understand and keep up with.

Bree thought everything was fine after the craziness from the last book but then someone is making changes to her timeline and screwing things up for her very badly and that includes things with Finn. Then Shifters start getting kidnapped and ICE we find out is even more devious then we first thought and Bree is running around trying to fix it all while slowly losing hope since every step she takes forward in fixing things someone is right there messing it all up and she has to take two steps back.

Then there was the ending which I think was perfect, yes in a way it was bittersweet but you know what... I get it and it makes sense. Overall this is one of the better time traveling books I have come across and I highly recommend the duology, both books were fast paced and a complete page turner.

Excellent Ending to an Excellent Duology!

I have basically told everyone and anyone that they needed to read Karen Akin’s debut Loop. I seriously loved that book so much. So when I saw it was a duology I knew I needed to read Twist. I loved that Bree and Finn’s story wasn’t done yet, that there were still ends that needed to be tied up. I was thrilled I would be able to immerse myself in their world again and immerse I did. Twist…LOVED it!

(Spoilers for Loop included. Read that before you read my review!)

Twist picks up right where Loop left off. Bree and Finn are together and shifting happily between their worlds, trying to stop changes that people are attempting to make to the timeline. So far things are going well until Bree’s future self stops her from using the reverter to stop a change being made my Bree’s former friend Wyck. Future Bree tells Bree that shifters are being taken and this change is the on,y way to help. Now Bree is stuck in a world where Wyck is her boyfriend and Finn is dating someone else. With everything backward Bree must work to figure out who is taking shifters and why. But when Finn is taking Bree has to figure out if being with him is even worth it for his own safety.

Okay so my description of the book does it no justice. I mean no matter what words I wrote it wouldn’t. Twist is just too, for lack of a better word, twisty, for me to really explain. This book really hurt my head in places as I tried to figure out exactly what was going on. And then all of a sudden there was a moment in the story that pulled everything together and made it all make sense and made me go, ‘OH!!!’. It just pulled all the pieces together in such a way that was almost magical. It made me feel like Bree did, only having some of the parts of the story and then having the whole thing right there. Basically it was awesome.

I won’t lie though, my heart hurt for a lot of it because my Bree and Finn live is strong. They have such an amazing, natural chemistry that it was hard to have them so apart. But I got it. It made sense for the story and worked. Actually it made it even better when they were together because then they had to fight the spark. Just another thing to live about Twist.

What Karen Akins did with this duology is give readers a great time travel story that will make your brain hurt with paradoxes and crazy situations, but make you fall in love with the story and the characters. When all is said in done it isn’t about time travel and fixing the world the way it should be. It’s about finding who you should be with no matter the point in your life. It was fantastic and I can’t wait for more from this author who is in my auto-buy list for life.

My first thought upon finishing this book was wow. That one word was just about all I could process, even after the book had been closed for some time. I felt similar to this when Loop ended, so I probably should have known. But this book...

This book is even better than Loop. It is even more of an emotional roller coaster.

We begin the story with a fairly happy Finn and Bree. Sure, she's now her "future self" and still has to visit past Finn in order for the events in the previous book to have happened. But she only has one more shift into the past, and then they can live without this tangled mess of past and future. They deserve that, don't they?

Nope. Because, in the middle of their movie date, Bree realizes there has been another change to the timeline. And she is no longer at the movies with Finn, but with Wyck.

When she goes back to change things, her future self stops her -- and sets her up for another tangled mess. She has to figure out why she's been forced to date Wyck and, ultimately, how to stop these shifts in the timeline altogether. Once again, she is searching for The Truth.

As is typical for this series, those things all happened in the first few chapters. And the rest of the book is just as crazy. This book played with my emotions more than I've experienced in a long time. I hurt so, so much for Bree and this situation she was in. She is honestly the best, most relatable main character.

Then you add Finn. And the crazy story-telling from book one.

This is one of those books that leaves me near speechless -- and I also feel very afraid of spoiling it, because such a huge part of the story relies on experiencing the twists and turns for yourself. But I don't think anyone who enjoyed Loop could be disappointed by this one. It's wonderful. The perfect sequel.

Healed from a Broken Heart

I wanted to make amends to God for filing the annulment before I had fully allowed Him a chance to work in the marriage. Now, I'm satisfied I did all I could do. God knows this. This book guided me though the process, taught me to fight spiritually, and rely on God. I learned patience, forgiveness, and how to wait on God. My ex didn't come back, but that was a blessing. The miracle was him pocket dialing me and me hearing a conversation that clarified everything. I feel so free! I thought if I "failed" that I would die. I now realize that I didn't fail at all! I learned to took to God in probably the most difficult situation of my life. The book allowed me to stay with the process and really experience Him working though the situation. Not only did this process heal my heartache, what was revealed to me healed my heartache from the abuse that occurred during the marriage. I am grateful I tried. I learned so much, and now I can move ahead freely. Thanks to God!

Just what I was looking for!

I just spent several days online researching medicinal uses of CBD/hemp oil. I read articles, explored websites, perused product information from various hemp oil producers and queried folks on facebook. But the more I read, the more confused I became.

I knew that I wanted to try hemp oil. I had heard about the many health benefits of CBD and was hopeful that it might provide some relief for my chronic Fibromyalgia and Arthritis pain. But I couldn't find information on dosage or explanations of the uses of the various forms (drops, capsules, creams, etc.). But thankfully, while reading conflicting reviews of different CBD products on Amazon, I came across this book. Hooray! I immediately downloaded it and was able to read it in a little over an hour.

The book has just enough scientific and medical info to explain how and why CBD works as medicine; this gave me confidence that hemp oil is not just a fad, placebo or snake oil. Much of the research cited is from US government studies as well as universities (and there are plenty of citations and footnotes for those who want to go to the source). The author is clearly very well educated on the subject, and his experience in nursing and drug counseling are a real plus, adding to my confidence.

It's less of a "how-to" and more of a "why not?", if that makes sense. The author was careful not to prescribe; he didn't tell me how much CBD I should take. But he did give examples of the range of dosages used by people and suggests that it's a good idea to go "low and slow"; start at a low dose and increase slowly, preferable under a doctor's supervision. I now feel informed and confident enough to go forward and try this new/ancient medicine!

To the author: Bravo! You have shed light and reason on an important subject and provided a valuable service to a suffering public. You have my gratitude.

(A humble suggestion: you might consider taking the "nursing" reference out of the title. While the book would clearly be useful for those in the nursing profession, it is equally important and accessible to the lay reader, and I fear you might lose many potential readers who assume that it's a book written primarily for nurses. I almost passed it by for that reason; I'm glad I didn't! Also, I hope that you will decide to offer the book in a print version as well; some folks don't have access to e-readers; and some of us just prefer having a hard to copy to underline and highlight and reference repeatedly; it's just easier in "book" form! I would definitely buy a hard copy, if you decide to offer one.) Thank you again for your fine work. Good luck to you!

Thirteen reasons why I read this book

1 my twelve year old niece had to read for school
2 I read the back and was intrigued
3 the book seemed mysterious
4 the book seemed traumatic
5 the character was a young girl, I was a young girl once
6 it took place during high school
7 I had a tough time in high school
8 I could have been Hannah

I wasn't disappointed, page turner for sure, finished in 8 hours and am a better person for having read it

I tried NOT to like this book....if that makes sense...

Before and after.purchasing/reading this book, I took the time and read both positive and negative reviews. For those readers disgusted with Hannah, I say this: Your disgust and anger may stem from your unwanted ability to relate to her. The characters in this book are present in ALL of our lives. They possess different names and faces. The events in this story told by Hannah and Clay represent varying situations and turning points in all of our lives. For some, the author may have hit a bit too close to home. Many readers trivialized the "Hot or Not Hot" list, believing it to be a blip on this young woman's life radar to which she.simply overreacted. If you fall in that category, you missed the author's point. Completely. This wasn't the case of 13 people/events "making" Hannah commit suicide. Every incident mentioned caused and/or contributed to another incident. A list in and of itself is not a big deal. Of course not. The way in which Hannah's peers RESPONDED to her and TREATED her as a result of her "Best Ass" status were the contributing and instigating factors. These led to secondary and tertiary events...all of which became additional contributions to Hannah's spiral downward.
My heart ached for the lack of adult presence and influence in Hannah's life. For Hannah, adult figures were represented by Mr. Porter and Hannah's parents (whom we were never given the opportunity to meet). This served to highlight the fact that the story is told from the vantage point of two young adults...children, essentially. Two people who live in the 'here and now', for that is what adolescence is all about. Take the time and think back to that period of your life. Life is lived in the day, for the day and felt for that time. If things felt or were good, we wanted that feeling to continue. If life was painful, we wanted the hurt to stop. Immediately. We never imagined our adult selves...married or at 45 years of age...or with teens to call our own. The time was THEN. That is what was important.
If this book isn't a wake-up call for all parents, grandparents, adult siblings, teachers or anyone playing a role in the life of a teenager to become involved, then I don't know what is. It is an adult's responsibility to become familiar with their lives. To take notice. To interpret and deem as important occurrences that compared to our lives, seem trivial. A conquerable molehill to us may be a devastatingly unconquerable mountain for a teenager. Never accept one syllabic responses such as "Good" or "Okay" as adequate when questioning a teen about their day. Pry. Then pry some more. KNOW their friends, not just their names and faces. An adolescent who is morose or disgruntled has reasons for their behavior....it is easy for us to minimize those times by slapping a label on and calling it "a phase".
If that is done repeatedly and often enough, the outcome can be devastating.
This was delivered by the author. Loud and clear. Thank you, Mr. Asher. Well done.

The book itself takes place over a day, and if you really sit-down with this, you could probably finish it in a day.

The idea of a book being suspenseful I always thought was ridiculous, and I still do, so don't pay any attention to the book cover. However, I will say this book probably has the best build and overall it is very visual.

The story focuses mostly on the journey which led to a young girl's suicide and you can take it one of two ways:

1. Taking it how the smallest things we say and do can affect a person or 2. How sensitive the world has become to the point where coping and dealing with hardship has been disregarded as an option.

In many ways, this book is very visual and though our sort of guide is a bit too emotional for my taste, to seriously put yourself in his position, listening to the last thoughts and words of a girl you not only cared about, but could have possibly given hope, you by the end will probably understand why he seemingly gets so distraught. Much less remains so even after his name comes up in the tapes.

What is probably the greatest thing about the book is the premise. In case you haven't gotten it yet, a girl creates tapes for those who either pushed her over the edge or could have grabbed her to stop her from falling. Some pushed harder than others and some did more talking than taking hold. In some ways, it makes you reflect on your own life and people you had or do interact with. Not just to see the signs of what shows a person on the brink, but taking into consideration how much of an effect, or affect, you can have even when you are seemingly trying to be nice.

Like with many of the books I've read over the past few weeks, the love interest is the true star while the one who has fallen for them is the one staring from the sides. Thankfully though, Clay's role isn't made to attempt to share this spotlight and for him to be a main character beside her. In a way, he is written by Jay Asher to be someone you are standing beside as Hannah has her one woman show. And rather than be on the side of the stage, you are with Clay in the audience as on stage she takes you on her journey to those final moments.

Overall, I would definitely say to buy it. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a quick read, but that maybe because it is a bit fresh in a way and keeps things from dragging on so you go from one reason to the next, with just enough given to understand that person's affect/effect; but without Hannah or Clay really dragging out the experience.
