He currently holds the title of Senior Technical Architect at Ahead, a consulting firm based out of Chicago. Chris holds well over 30 active industry certifications, including the rare VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX #104), and is a recognized VMware vExpert. He also works to give back to the community as both an active “Master” user and moderator of the VMware Technology Network (VMTN) and as a Leader of the Chicago VMware User Group (VMUG). Disappointing

"The one-stop guide to modern networking for every VMware administrator, engineer, and architect". This book is an absolute homerun of a read for a junior network admin who landed his first job at a company leveraging vSphere. That said, I'm basing this review on the subject-matter depth I expected to glean from a book put out by VMware Press and authored by well-known blogger Chris Wahl. No disrespect to either of these parties but I feel this book missed the intended mark.

BLUF: There isn't much content here for a VMware Administrator. Even less for Engineer or Architect-level folks.
vCNS/vShield isn't mentioned. VXLANs aren't mentioned. SDN isn't mentioned, which I can understand since this is an Administrative guide, but NSX wasn't mentioned either. The scope of this book really is limited to just vSphere.

Chapters 1-6: Could have been cut and paste out of any networking 101 or Wikipedia article on networking basics. Other than passing mention of Nutanix's hyper-converged platform, these chapters offer little value to either a networking admin or a VMware admin.

Chapter 7 (How Virtual Switching Differs from Physical Switching): Useful for someone unfamiliar with VMware.

Chapters 8-10: Light on content, other than definitions of very basic concepts like what a VLAN is, what a VMkernel Port is, etc. At this point we're 135pgs into the book and we haven't touched a single thing that a low-level administrator (network or otherwise) can't rattle off in his sleep.
To say I'm disappointed is an understatement, but maybe we can still have some redemption in the second half of the book.

Chapter 11 (Lab Scenario): More definitions, a screen grab of the VLANs from UCS manager, and a picture of the summary tab of an ESXi 5.5 host, taken from the web client. Is this to prove that the authors have access to a server? I don't understand why they are wasting so many pages saying NOTHING!

Chapter 12 (Standard vSwitch Design): Importance of establishing naming conventions, and building a standard vSwitch that will carry all management and virtual machine traffic using 4 portgroups and 2 NICs. There is also mention of the VMkernel port req'd for NFS traffic. More on these topics later in the book though.

Chapter 13 (vDS design): Worthwhile chapter on how to build a distributed vSwitch.

Chapters 14 and 15 (iSCSI considerations): Definitions and basic configuration. Nothing new here.

Chapters 16 & 17 (NFS overview): Good chapters on how VMware handles NFS traffic and how to do a basic configuration.

Chapter 18 (additional vSwitch Design Scenarios): vSwitch design suggestions for hosts that have more than 2 physical NICs.

Chapter 19 (Multi-NIC vMotion Architecture): Interesting chapter on a concept I don't often think about.

An excellent resource for VMware admins doing networking, or networks admins working with VMware

I recently got my hands on a copy of Chris Wahl and Steve Pantol’s Networking for VMware Administrators and was very keen to read it – especially given the reputation of the authors. I came to the book as someone who is at CCNA level (although now expired) and someone who regularly designs complex VMware networks using standard and distributed switches. I would class myself as having a fairly decent understanding of networking, though not a networking specialist.

The book starts out at from a really basic level explaining OSI, what a protocol is etc. and builds on the foundation set out as it progresses. Part I of the book gives are really good explanation of not only the basics of networking, but a lot of the “why” as well. If you’ve done CCNA level networking exams then you will know most of this stuff – but it’s always good to refresh, and maybe cover any gaps.

Part II of the book translates the foundations set out in Part I into the virtual world and takes you through the similarities and differences with between virtual and physical. It gives a good overview of the vSphere Standard Switch (VSS) and vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) and even has a chapter on the Cisco 1000v. One of the really useful parts of the book are the lab examples and designs, which takes you though the design process and considerations to get to the solution.

Part III is an excellent and detailed section on storage networking covering networks for iSCSI and NFS, and design and configuration of both – with use cases. If you’ve not had much experience with these protocols in a production environment then this section will be a fantastic resource.

Part IV is labelled “Other Design Scenarios” and contains a lot of reference storage design examples based on numbers of NICs available in a host and whether that includes IP based storage – again, another really useful resource.

I really like the writing style that the authors have used, there’s enough humour and anecdotal/real world reference to drag it out of the “pure technical” category and help engage the reader, without detracting from the sheer volume of information that’s contained in the book.

Throughout the book there are lots of clear diagrams which help to explain and expand on the text, and again improve the readability of the book.

I would recommend this to any VMware administrator with responsibility for designing and managing VMware networking – and also perhaps some network administrators who work with a VMware team. It will give insight into how the two relate to each other. I’d probably even recommend it to storage administrators who manage iSCSI and NFS storage networks with VMware.

There are parts of the book that were really basic and, I have to confess, I skipped over – but as I mentioned before I have a fair amount of networking experience. But there is also enough meat on the bones to make the book worthwhile and a great resource for your bookshelf.

Excellent addition to any VMware professional's library. Get it!

Being a consultant who works daily with VMware technologies, yet lacking a background in networking, I had been eagerly anticipating the release of this book for a while. Networking was always something that ‘someone else’ did in the past but due to the convergence of data centre skills this attitude really doesn’t cut it anymore. The timing is highly appropriate and I have been a fan of Chris Wahl’s material for a while so was very happy to get my hands on a copy.
First things first, the biggest achievement of this book was to hold my attention throughout its entire duration. Even when covering some relatively non-glamorous, yet essential, topics it did not, at any point become too dry and make me lose interest. The authors have a slightly humorous yet non-flippant style that keeps you reading and entertained yet doesn’t skimp on the content.
In terms of technical detail the most interesting part for me by far were the use cases. The authors talk you through multiple different permutations of network adapters and port requirements across both vSphere standard and distributed switches, in each case allowing you to put together a resilient and performant design. I’ve been reading about these things for years now but rarely have I seen the info collated together so concisely in one place with proper justifications that actually make sense. I now confidently feel I could design vSphere host networking in most common configurations and make informed choices, justifying their selection. The other one that was great for me was the description of the different options for networking to NFS storage and getting around the lack of multipathing. I was faced with this issue with a client last year and literally spent countless hours combing google for good answers on this, turning up very little that made sense, but finally now it was summarised for me in a handful of pages. Thirdly it has an excellent section on multi-nic vmotion.
If I could make some suggestions for what I would have liked to see then maybe it would have been good to see some highly detailed packet-walks for traffic between VMs within/between hosts across the physical network and the processes that take place. In addition I was surprised to not see at least a one-pager at the end about network virtualisation and the future of virtual data centre networking, although I realise this was not within the scope of the book. Having said that I used this text as a primer before hitting an NSX bootcamp at VMware and it really helped me prepare for/survive the, rather intense, training. Overall I’m very impressed with this book and it’s definitely one of the best that I have in my library now. Highly recommended and I’m sure anyone who works in this field and knows the quality of the authors will be buying anyway. I’m off to start my second read…(this doesn't happen often)

I found this book when I was looking for guidance while trying to teach my students abacus basics. I loved it! After reading the book, which is child friendly, I went to the author's website for more helpful information. I feel ready to confidently work with my students after following the easy steps and plan on furthering my own study of the abacus because this book made it so understandable.

I have gone through several abacus books and those are not easy to follow

This is the abacus book I have been waiting for. I have gone through several abacus books and those are not easy to follow. This book is fun for the kids and it has a lot of graphics with images that make the learning memorable. My kids are excited to practice each concepts after following the instructions. It encourages my kids to keep learning all the concepts till the end. I sincerely appreciate the clarity on the detail explanation used in the book, and I don’t have to guide my kids going through the whole book. My friend’s kid actually attends Abacus Brain Gym’s onsite training and that’s how I discovered this book. They talk highly about Abacus Brain Gym’s training and they are very happy with the result and the quality of the training system.

A Must Read, and Probably Re-Read, Re-Re--Read

I am usually the loudest mouth to say, "Enough with the Hello World, give me some real meat". Well it seems Adam must have heard me because there is very little "Hello World" in this book.

This book is a MUST for any serious developer looking to keep his/her edge on the latest technology and an excellent primer for things to come in the Windows Metro world soon to be.

I caution anyone who is not a seasoned programmer to avoid this book. Having said that, I caution any season programmer to be prepared for multiple re-reads of this book.

It is not that the author is a poor explainer, rather, Adam does a great job showing what is needed in today's world of more client side script & mobile device. The book is nearly 260 pages and there is very little fluff. As a C# MVC developer this book is a definite reference item for me.

As example, I am embarrassed to say how little attention I bothered to give Knockout script -- no more.

I could go on and rant into specifics but I do not think a complex testimonial serves much use here. But, the key items I especially liked about this book were discussions concerning:

1. Client-side url routing
2. Storing data in the browser (especially for offline apps)
3. Writing more fluid and easier to manage mobile apps.

Bottom line: The world is mobile, the world is more client script centric, the world is more Web API. If you are not on board for that reality, find another profession. If you agree, read and re-read this book!

Great book for JavaScript novice

Book helped me immensely as I was learning KnockoutJS. It's the first book published to cover KO and it sits on my desk with a bunch of pages bookmarked. Make sure to download book's source code from Apress and use the included versions of Crossroads and Hasher libraries, since their latest versions will not as is with book's source code examples. Once you learn how Hasher and Crossroads included with the book's code work, then download the latest versions of those libraries and update your code, it is trivial.

Amazing book on javascript, knockoutJS, etc

This was an awesome introduction for me to client side web programming. I come from a database application background and me just trying to break into web development. I read Adam's book on asp.net mvc 4 and really enjoyed it but for the life of me, no matter how much I read online or other places, could not get my head around javascript and how to really take advantage of the client side of web programming. This book instantly brought me up to speed. Adam is an amazing teacher and writer. I felt like I had an advanced mentor taking me through all the relevant aspects of client side web development. The pacing was great, really moved along appropriately and I felt like I was always growing in my understanding with each page. I especially appreciate how using this book allowed me to filter through all the noise that is on the web surrounding web programming, so many competing libraries and products, it's hard when you're just trying to learn something to know if the product you're exploring is really worth your time. I'm sure Adam's examples are both top picks as well as solid foundations that would allow usage of other products if desired.

I wholly recommend this book and author.

For Photographs Not Taken, editor Will Steacy asked 62 photographers to describe the ones that got away - the "mental negatives" that haunt them years later. No printed images mar this page-turning collection of anecdotes from 62 working photographers. They are men and women like Mary Ellen Mark, Andrew Moore, Laurel Nakadate, Alec Soth, Todd Hido and the late Tim Hetherington, whose cameras are practically extensions of their bodies. Editor Will Steacy asked each to describe an irresistible photo op that they let pass, however great the temptation or ingrained the habit.
Their "mental negatives," as Steacy terms their recollections, bring up a variety of ethical questions that stem from a common predicament: whether to shoot or not -- or, in Hetherington's case, whether to expose an image of the dead to the public or not. The book is full of lost moments and missed opportunities, some poignant, some hilarious, some mysterious. (We never find out why Ballen did not photograph inside the witch doctor's house. Was it superstition, or had he simply gone out without his camera?) One of the funniest is told by Matt Salacuse. As a struggling photographer in New York, he was waiting to meet his father in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, when he spotted Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman with their newborn adopted baby. Salacuse went outside and positioned himself by a waiting limo, waiting for the celebrity couple to emerge. Just as he was about to photograph them, Cruise looked straight at him and said calmly: "You're not going to do that." Salacuse writes: "It must have been some crazy Scientologist voodoo mind trick, because I looked at him and said, 'You are right. I am not.' And, I didn't."
Like the others, all that Salacuse was left with from his chance encounter was a story about a great photograph that never happened. Sometimes, as this book shows, that's enough. (Sean O'Hagan The Guardian)

Wisdom for all photographers

The book is a collection of short essays - by a wide range of photographers - about moments in space and time that never became photographs! Oh, how well I (as all photographers can, at one time or another) resonate with those moments. Maybe we've forgotten our camera, or our tripod, or filter; maybe our camera froze at an inopportune moment; maybe the subject of our gaze shifted its position, or flew away, as we were preparing to take the picture; maybe a gust of wind blew that perfectly composed image into the mists of time, or that sudden burst of sun from behind a cloud ruined the perfect exposure.

As a photographer myself, the book made me think of many of my own "Photographs Not Taken" moments; when, even though I was in the right state of mind and soul, and had perfectly well functioning camera and gear by my side, the photograph I wanted to take - the photograph I needed to take - I did not take, and is now gone forever. I vividly recall one particular series of photographs I could easily have taken and never did. It happened between 25 and 30 years ago, when my dad (an art restorer / artist) was still in his prime and worked at home in his upstairs studio. Except for one precious photograph, captured more by accident than design, I do not have any other visual record of my dad working as an art restorer in his studio! This represents the single greatest regret in my life as a photographer (thus far); namely, that I had never trained my eye and camera on my dad while he was still alive and worked in his studio.

Photographs Not Taken contains many stories similar to mine, that range from whimsical, to personal, to tragic. Of course, the book contains no photographs (at least of the conventional variety ;-) and even the typesetting is kept to a bare minimum, the focus being squarely on the stories themselves. But collectively, these wonderful stories teach us what we must do to become better photographers. They remind us that we are - in each and every moment of our lives - immersed in an infinite field of ever-changing extraordinary and timeless images; and the fact that we have or have not a camera, or want or do not want or cannot use it, hardly even matters. Just look, revel in what you feel, and remember.

What happens to a photo untaken?

OK so if a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is a picture untaken worth? This brisk but captivating collection answers that just question. In thoughtful, short vignettes accomplished photographers recall That Unsnapped Moment in their careers or lives. This book reports on how a photo that never happened occupies the imagination, how it is developed by memory, and rendered in writing. There is some magical imagery and sentence-ing in these collections and it's probably magical because it reminds us that any picture that presumes to capture the "now" becomes instantly elegiac (see Instagram, which fetishizes that transformation). So the perfectly composed moment remembered through the lens of relinquishment becomes even more haunted. It's also fascinating to browse through all the reasons that seasoned photographers miss or choose to miss the perfect shot. I was surprised how different all the disclosures are from each other, and yet how touchingly personal, whether an author is attending the birth of his child or chasing news in Syria.

The writing of some of these compact, punchy essays is so evocative I am encouraged to check out the work of these photographers to see if their snapped photos match the keeness of their observations. Here is Laurel Nagadate: "There is a beauty in not being enough. Sometimes, photographs live in our hearts as unborn ghosts and we survive not because their shadows find a permanence there, but because that thing that is larger than us, larger than the things we can point to, remember, and claim, escorts us from dark into light, we emerge from the flames with no one in our arms, and we never unpack the camera." This collection is a potent tribute to not unpacking the camera but taking the moment anyway. Highly recommended if you take photography or memory at all seriously.

Compelling and thought-provoking

This book really allows you to let your imagination hold hands with these A list photographers as they each eloquently describe a photograph not taken. Simply being out of film, not knowing how to get into the action, respecting a subject's privacy or their own, every essay is a little gem and an insight to the realities and practicalities of this art. Sylvia Plachy's words haunt me: "Diane Arbus would have done it."

The best Sichuan cookbook I've come across

I was very surprised when I found this book in this library, because authentic Chinese cookbooks are difficult enough to find, and anything regional and non-Cantonese even rarer. I myself had never been to Sichuan, though my family did often dined at excellent Sichuan restaurants in Taiwan.

Before I proceed to the recipes, let me state that having read the book several times already (!), this is by far the best regional cookbook on Chinese cooking I've read in English. The author has a talent for combining the precise instruction needed for writing a cookbook and a poetic flair for capturing the local attitude to food. Knowing that most of her audience would likely be unfamiliar with daily life in Sichuan, often a mystery even to outside Chinese, she details the street life there. One of my favorite part is that consequently, her cooking is mostly based on home style and street food rather than haute banquet cuisine (though there are a few recipes of those too). I find this a prudent choice, as banquet food are almost always too elaborate for home cooks, and few things reflect regional cuisine as well as street food.

Most of the recipes are pretty straight forward, and addictively delicious. I've made some from the noodles section are my favorite, as I'm a big fan of snack food. Most of these food do not require more than a good cleaver, wok, and standard kitchen equipment to make. However, the Sichuan peppercorn is an absolute essential. Regarding to another review's warning, I believe the ban on fagara has been lifted, given that the pepper be subjected to high heat before import. Simple googling will turn up the sources.

Another caveat, though it's not the really the author's fault, is that there were surprisingly few vegetable dishes, and even fewer vegetarian. This may be surprisingly given that most of China subside on primarily vegetable-based diets. However, there are actually not that many famous Sichuan vegetarian dishes, probably because they are seen as peasant affair. For vegetarians, I'd recommend borrowing this from the library or friend and copying down the dozen or so relevant recipes (after reading the entire book of course).

Lastly, there are very few sweet dishes. This may bother some people, but sweets really are not part of daily traditional meals anyways, save for the complicated holiday specialities, so in a way I'm glad she left them out.

I really am glad this book come to being. I don't have much actual complaints except that I wish there were more pictures. There are some here but not many, and given the unfamiliarity of most people to these cuisine I think photos would help. But otherwise, a new favorite and a real standout.

Made back the cost of the book in Kung Pao Chicken dinners

There are no steamed dishes but mostly require wok frying so the recipes aren't the healthiest but they are not that oily either (two teaspoons of oil in the wok and one teaspoon of sesame oil in the sauce for the Kung POW!)

The layout of the book is encouraging and I had no problem reaching for it when I am at a loss over what to cook for dinner. Luckily I have chili peppers and sichuan peppercorn in my larder now so I am well-prepared to tackle these recipes which call for simple ingredients but the resulting flavors are complex and addictive. Once that ginger meets the sichuan pepper infused oil, one can taste the deliciousness of the dish by fragrance alone.

I also understand what Chinese takeout food is all about now. These flavors are crowd pleasers and an unskilled cook like myself enjoys a 100% pass rating from picky eaters when these dishes are served.

This is a perfect book and I laugh at Fuschia Dunlop's photo because I think her smile is like my inner smile when I see or think of something good to eat. My only regret with the layout is that the order of the ingredients for the marinade and the sauce are not in the same order so that if I need cornstarch in both liquids, I can use one measuring spoon for two ramekins.

Because of this book, I purchased sichuan peppercorns, my first ever pricey knife, a Krups coffee grinder, more sesame oil, two bottles of Jonesy port and more cutting boards. The lip smacking flavors of Sichuanese cuisine are that motivating.

Best cook book every written. Period!

After cooking every single recipe in this book, I can confidently say that this is probably the best cook book every written.

Fuchsia's commitment to tradition and authenticity is evident and her instructions are clear and concise. Even more challenging recipes such as tea-smoked duck are remarkably simple if you plan ahead accordingly.

An Invaluable Guide

As consumers we've probably all purchased an item without really completely considering all the expenses involved beyond the initial investment. For instance, with a car you pay for the car itself, but you also need to factor in insurance, maintenance, fuel, taxes, etc. These extra expenses need to be considered especially carefully when one is considering a large purchase

This book does an amazing job of exploring all the various expenses involved with an organization's major software purchase including not only the cost of the software itself, but the hardware, implementation, and maintenance costs. The author discusses all the areas where expenses may occur during every step of the process and and clearly and concisely outlines them. He also uses numerous graphs and tables to fully illustrate the material.

I highly recommend this to anyone who needs a clear, well written guide to assist you in the decision making process. No matter the size of your company this is an invaluable resource that can help you determine the real total cost of ownership for your potential purchase.

Informative and important book

Finally a book on the topic of enterprise software TCO! For those that are serious about performing TCO analysis and getting benefits from it, this book is definitely for you! Its amazing to me that this book is actually the first and only book on this important subject. I love how the author made this book so “readable.” If you have read any of the author’s other outstanding books, you will know that he has a direct style.

There is a lot of great information in this book but its broken down in graphs and easily manageable chapters. I’ve always confused TCO with ROI and was thrilled that the author even had a section on distinguishing the two. The author also helps to clarify confusion around similar terminology. There is so much great takeaway information in this book but perhaps most interesting to me was the chapter on using TCO for better decision making. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this informative book.

As the author points out himself, there isn't another book on the market like this one. There will no doubt some wailing and gnashing of teeth on the part of software suppliers who would much prefer this type of information and analysis be kept hidden from potential purchasers. As I am currently involved in a major ERP evaluation, this book was really timely. I found myself champing at the bit to get past the introductory Chapter 1, which was if I'm being honest perhaps a little on the long side, and onto the real "secret sauce", but it was worth the investment to get to that point. The entire book is thorough, professional and of great practical use - money well spent by anyone considering a major investment in software.

If you want the Truth, read this book.

This is the latest work by Robert Scheinfeld, the no bull teacher who tells it like it is from his own experience, not something regurgitated from the many self help 'gurus' out there, all with their own systems to find our ultimate goal or whatever. This author pulls no punches but explains the whole story in crystal clear terms with a practical blueprint that anyone can follow in order to find the thing we're all searching for...True Happiness. To follow in his footsteps you can throw away the orange robes, go and pig out on a Big Mac or two, wash it down with a bottle of beer and sit back and light up a smoke before reading this book which will cut through all the myths and bull surrounding this elusive thing we're all looking for. The author describes in simple terms just what Happiness really is and shows you the reader just how to find it, and once you see how simple it really is, you'll wonder why you haven't discovered it before.

This book is written for everyone but not everyone will see or reap the benefits from it. Just as the young bird cannot immediately fly as soon as it comes out of the egg, it requires a certain level of growth before the reader can understand the concepts presented here and when the reader is ready, flying with it will take no effort whatsoever. Robert also gives links to other resources from his website; these will enhance the reader's experience but are not really necessary in order to get the full value of this book. Those readers who really resonate with the ideas presented here will dive in, take the Red Pill and begin to fly, others may put the book on the shelf and come back to it later but anyone who reads it will start to think about what he's talking about and one way or another the message will sink in; just what you'll do with it is entirely up to you.

Should you buy this book? I can't tell anyone what they 'should' or 'shouldn't' do, nor can anyone else, but if you're serious about finding True Happiness, you can't make a better start than here.

This book has no heart and soul

When I heard about Robert Scheinfeld's new book "The Ultimate Key to Happiness" I had high expectations. With such a title I expected it to be a terrific book with heart and soul. Well it wasn't. In a nut shell the message of the book is whatever you feel and whatever emotions come up just stay neutral, don't listen to your mind machine and let the truth virus do its job and you will be happy all the time. I had gotten the biggest aha moment while reading "Busting Loose from the Money Game" by Scheinfeld. This new book was a huge let down and lacked substance. The book is totally devoid of heart and soul, it reads like a manual for computer. He uses the term mind machine buzzing and whirring so many time I thought I would go mad. To make matter worse the chapter on the Red Pill was a shameless promotion for a 24 week course. This book is an infomercial I had to pay for.

Con artist or helper of humanity?

I purchased 2 copies of The Ultimate Key to Happiness. I wanted to share this book with others as I was impacted by Busting Loose from the Money Game. This book is where Robert spoke truth about us being in the illusion (dream) and how I could see this truth in my own life. Every time I took others to his web-site to also experience this truth...the only thing we encountered was a commercial for one of his expensive programs. This was very discouraging. I felt used. I was hoping his newest book would clarify understanding of our situation in our collective dream. It did not. It was only a lead in to his on line programs. We all know our thoughts and emotions are creating our reality. He does help us to become aware of dropping attachment to the story and allowing the emotional energy to just be experienced, without judging it. Now what do we do with this information and how does it take us to our authentic self? Give more money to Robert and he can take us on another trip to needing to know more? My heart aches over this. How are we ever going to come together for win/win, when money is the name of the game? This tells me Robert does not really believe what he is preaching.
Roberts books are a good stepping off point for a shift of consciousness but there is so much more available to us in opening our hearts and embracing the Truth of who we are.
