Vaguely useful

We did a thorough comparison of the Budapest Guide and the Budapest section of Lonely Planet's Hungary Guide. The extra information provided in the Budapest book was (for the most part) simply more detail about the material already reported in the nationwide guide. It was more conversational, more spread out, yet with no genuine added content. Reviews of eateries and lodgings were no more in-depth and only slightly greater in number. Take a pass on this one. Lonely Planet's Hungary Guide is roughly just as useful in Budapest, and has the added advantage of telling you about so much in this fascinating country that's outside the standard tourist line.

The restaurant descriptions seemed very vague and generally unhelpful. I think that the maps could be organized better, so that they would be easier to use.
The description of the Metro did not adequately describe the different types of tickets and where and when they are valid. I found out at the end of our trip that tickets are cheaper (admittedly, only a bit) when bought from a ticket window rather than a ticket machine. And by the time I left, even after searching two guidebooks, I still wasn't always sure which type of ticket I needed for a given journey.

Questionable Investment

This book has good general resources for the Metro, and general services, but I found the descriptions of sites to see a bit lacking. The placement of the maps next to the corresponding sites of interest or sections of the cities would have made touring much easier. Flipping to the back constantly was nerving. Also, I found the walking tours hard to follow, and would have preferred some pictures as a reference (descriptions of sites are lacking). If you are a visual person like I am this book is not for you.

The New Bible of Animation Design

If you're reading this review, you obviously don't need an introduction to who Maurice Noble was. His contributions as a designer and layout man to such landmark animated films as RABBIT SEASONING, WHAT'S OPERA DOC?, DUCK AMUCK, ROBIN HOOD DAFFY, the Road Runner series, and DUCK DODGERS IN THE 241/2TH CENTURY make his name as firmly inseparable from them as the director Chuck Jones's.

Tod Polson was a prot�g� of Noble's who has finally realized his generous teacher's dream of putting all of Noble's notes and theories on animation design in book form. You'll first learn about Noble's history and find out how things were like in the ever-evolving Golden Age of animation, and then how things got so bad that Noble was afraid the wisdom he mistook for common knowledge would vanish into the ether - hence why he wanted his thoughts recorded in the first place!

If you want to know how Noble did it and how you can possibly instill some of his own virtues into your work, don't just watch the films. Let Polson take you on this very intimate journey and show you how Noble took care to make sure his design met the needs of every single element of an animated film and not the other way around. More importantly, the book is lavishly and colorfully illustrated to appropriately aid the instructions, driving home every point clearly and beautifully.

Good book for those into animation and design

[[VIDEOID:mo2IKTQCAW23DW5]]The Noble Approach is a book that's part biography and part animation design tips featuring the late great Maurice Noble.

As a kid, I would watch the Warner Bros cartoons and never think about things like art and design. They are good which is why people watch them.

Well, in this book, you'll go behind the scenes and look at the person who has a hand at creating some of these animated productions, and understand his design philosophies.

Author Tod Polson who has apprenticed under Noble has done a good job with the biography detailing the designer's life and career right from the start. It's an inspiring tale of someone who has gone through a tumultuous period, with the need to support his family while still young, going through various career changes, having the ups and downs with co-workers, while still maintaining the passion to put out good design for animation and screen.

The biography is about a third of the book. The rest are his philosophies on design. It's on how he handles story beats, story elements, using reference, contrast, simplifying elements, colour theory, perspective, layout, and more. The text and the illustrated examples are insightful. It's a collection of design principles he has learned and compiled over the 60 years he spent in the industry.

It's a good book for those into animation and design, or into traditional animation design.

A must have book on the best layout artist!

Maurice Noble was the biggest influence on me in my decision to enter the animation arena. Maurice created most of the layouts (the backgrounds) for Chuck Jones during the classic Warner Bros. cartoons era. As a kid, I would specifically look for Maurice's and Chuck's names to appear in the credits, because I knew it was going to be a great cartoon.

I now have a wonderful companion book to Frank & Ollie's "The Illusion of Life" as a valuable learning guide to study the masters of animation.

This book is well organized and comprehensive as an introduction to this field. It will suit the purposes of someone who seeks a well-grounded foundation in linguistics, even if s/he doesn't want to do further study. It also serves the purpose of the degree-seeking student who may have no background in the field. I read it carefully, took notes, and feel better prepared to succeed in the upcoming coursework which will address this material in greater depth.
The writing is accessible while still assuming a college-level knowledge of the concepts.

Sam, a college sophomore, sat in my Business Law class with his eyes cast downward. He yawned occasionally. Never really paying attention to the class discussion, he took no notes and chose not to participate. What are you lacking, other than good grades, which would deter you from finding a good job after you graduate?” Sam hesitated. His face turned downward. After I while, he answered, “I’m really don’t think I’m all that attractive. I don’t socialize very much. I’m not great at math. I’m a poor writer.” I leaned forward, waited until Sam looked at me in the eyes, and said: “Sam, great things happen in life to great people. Are you willing to become a great person?” Sam lowered his head. I continued, “Sam, can you commit to give me an extra two hours a week of your time for the next ten weeks? Professor Ron A. Rhoades, JD, CFP� has sailed across the Atlantic on a tall ship, performed in theme parks and road shows in Europe and America as a Disney character, rowed on a championship crew team, marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, marched in competition with a state-champion rifle drill team, escorted numerous celebrities around Central Florida, performed as a “Tin Man” at a mountaintop theme park called “The Land of Oz” in Beech Mountain, NC, and served as a stage manager and talent scheduling coordinator for entertainment productions at Walt Disney World. And then he graduated college. Since then, Ron Rhoades earned a Juris Doctor degree, with honors, from the University of Florida College of Law, which was preceded by a B.S.B.A. from Florida Southern College. Ron Rhoades has over 25 years of experience as an attorney, and over nearly 15 years as a personal financial adviser. In addition to teaching college classes, Prof. Rhoades serves a select number of clients through his investment advisory firm, ScholarFi, Inc. The author of numerous articles published in financial industry publications and several books, he has been quoted in numerous consumer and trade publications. He writes the occasional “One-Man Think Tank” column for RIABiz, an online industry publication. Ron is a frequent speaker at national conferences in the financial planning and investment advisory professions. Ron Rhoades was the recipient of The Tamar Frankel Fiduciary of the Year Award for 2011, from The Committee for the Fiduciary Standard. His peers elected him to the "Sweet 16" Most Influential in Wealth Management magazine's 2014 poll. He was also named as one of the Top 25 Most Influential persons associated with the investment advisory profession in 2011 by Investment Advisor magazine. Ron A. Rhoades, JD, CFP� is currently Program Director for the Financial Planning Program at Alfred State College, Alfred, New York, where he serves as an Asst. Professor within its Business Department. He also serves as Chair of the Steering Committee of The Committee for the Fiduciary Standard, on whose behalf he frequently travels to Washington, D.C. to meet with policy makers in Congress and in government agencies regarding the application of the fiduciary standard to personalized investment advice. Prof. Rhoades is known for his love of teaching, and he serves as advisor and mentor to many students at Alfred State College.
