Preface

Microsoft .NET is an advance in programming technology that greatly simplifies application development both for traditional, proprietary applications, and for the emerging paradigm of Web-based services. .NET is a complete restructuring of Microsoft�s whole system infrastructure and represents a major learning challenge for programmers developing applications on Microsoft platforms. The new platform includes a new programming language C# and a major class library, the .NET Framework.

This book covers important topics in the .NET Framework for experienced programmers. You do not need prior experience in C#, because there is a self-contained treatment, but you should have experience in some object-oriented language such as C++ or Java. The book could also be read by a seasoned Visual Basic programmer who has experience working with objects and components in VB.

If you already understand C#, you may safely skip or skim Chapters 3 and 4. Chapter 5 contains important information about the interactions of C# and the .NET Framework. You may then proceed with a detailed study of the .NET Framework in Chapters 6 and beyond. For a thorough introduction to the C# language you may read the book Introduction to C# Using .NET.

The book is practical, with many examples and a major case study. The goal is to equip you to begin building significant applications using the .NET Framework. The book is part of The Integrated .NET Series from Object Innovations and Prentice Hall PTR.

Organization

The book is organized into five major parts, and is structured to make it easy for you to navigate to what you most need to know. The first part, consisting of Chapters 1 and 2, should be read by everyone. It answers the question "What is Microsoft .NET?" and outlines the programming model of the .NET Framework.

The second part, consisting of Chapters 3�5, covers the C# programming language. If you are already familiar with C# you can skim these chapters, paying the most attention to Chapter 5, which covers topics such as interfaces, delegates, and events. This chapter also describes important interactions between C# and the .NET Framework. The case study, which is elaborated throughout the entire book, is introduced in Chapter 4.

The third part, Chapters 6�9, covers important fundamental topics in the .NET Framework. Chapter 6 covers user interface programming using the Windows Forms classes. Chapter 7 discusses assemblies and deployment, which constitute a major advance in the simplicity and robustness of deploying Windows applications, ending the notorious "DLL hell." Chapter 8 delves into important .NET Framework classes, including the topics of metadata, serialization, threading, attributes, application domains, asynchronous programming, remoting, and memory management. Chapter 9 covers ADO.NET, which provides a consistent set of classes for accessing both relational and XML Data.

The fourth part of the book provides an in-depth introduction to Web programming using ASP.NET and SOAP. Chapter 10 introduces the fundamentals of ASP.NET, including the use of Web Forms, which greatly simplifies the development of sophisticated Web sites. Chapter 11 covers SOAP and Web Services, which provide an easy-to-use and robust mechanism for heterogeneous systems to interoperate.

The final part of the book covers additional important topics in the .NET Framework. Chapter 12 covers the topic of security in detail, including code access security, declarative security, and the securing of Web applications and services. Chapter 13 introduces the debug and trace classes provided by .NET. Chapter 14 covers interoperability of .NET with COM and with Win32 applications.

Sample Programs

The only way to really learn a major framework is to read and write many, many programs, including some of reasonable size. This book provides many small programs that illustrate pertinent features of .NET in isolation, which makes them easy to understand. The programs are clearly labeled in the text, and they can all be found in the software distribution that accompanies this book.

A major case study, the Acme Travel Agency, is progressively developed in Chapters 4 through 12. It illustrates many features of C# and .NET working in combination, as they would in a practical application.

The sample programs are provided in a self-extracting file on the book�s Web site. When expanded, a directory structure is created, whose default root is c:\OI\NetCs. The sample programs, which begin with the second chapter, are in directories Chap02, Chap03, and so on. All the samples for a given chapter are in individual folders within the chapter directories. The names of the folders are clearly identified in the text. Each chapter that contains a step of the case study has a folder called CaseStudy, containing that step. If necessary, there is a readme.txt file in each chapter directory to explain any instructions necessary for getting the examples to work.

This book is part of The Integrated .NET Series. The sample programs for other books in the series are located in their own directories underneath \OI, so all the .NET examples from all books in the series will be located in a common area as you install them.

These programs are furnished solely for instructional purposes and should not be embedded in any software product. The software (including instructions for use) is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind.

Caveat

The book and the associated code were developed with Beta 2 of the .NET Framework. Microsoft has indicated that this version of .NET is close to what will be the final version. Nonetheless, changes will be made before .NET is released. The code in the examples has been verified to work only with Windows 2000. Database code has been verified with SQL Server 2000. Several examples in the database and security chapters have machine names embedded in connection strings or role names. When trying to run these examples, you will have to replace those names with the appropriate name for your machine. To make installation easy, the database examples run with user name "sa" and without a password. Needless to say, in a real system you should NEVER have any login id without a password or have a database application use sa to log into a database.

Great overview!

This book is extremely well written, the topics are presented in a clear and logical manner and the explanations are great. It has an excellent introduction to the .NET framework, a C# overview (this is NOT a book for learning C# from scratch), a chapter on UI programming (event handling, menus, controls, dialog boxes etc), Assemblies and Deployment, the .NET framework class library, ADO.NET, ASP.NET, Web Services, Security and more. All these subjects could span thick books on their own but this book explains what they are and ties them all in together, without going into massive detail. This book works best when you use it to learn about the different areas of .NET and how they work together and reference other books or the documentation for an in-depth look at specific topics.
Get this book if:
- you are an experienced programmer who is still wondering "what is .NET?" and wants to get a great overview of .NET programming
- if you have developed applications the "old" way and need to quickly jump into .NET development and get a job done without having to know every detail of what goes on underneath the hood
- if you already know Java or C++ and are looking to learn about the basics of C# and about how you can use it in the .NET framework to get the job done.
Do NOT get this book if:
- you are looking for a total and complete tutorial on C#
- you are a beginner at programming and want to start out by learning the .NET framework (this book assumes prior knowledge)
- you want total in-depth knowledge of how the .NET framework works under the hood
- if you do not already have (at least a basic) understanding of application programming

good book, expansive coverage, but room for improvement

This book has a lot of positive things going for it. The target audience is clearly developers with a little experience under their belts. This is great ( assuming you actually *do* have a little experience under your belt ), because there isn't a lot of wasted bulk in the book covering language syntax details that you can pick up if you have any programming experience. Instead, the book focuses on the meaty topics of app development - e.g., security in the .NET platform, threading, application models, a bit of windows forms, a bit of ADO, a bit of ASP. and a nice section on the built-in debugging and tracing facilities of .NET. The scope of the book is rather expansive, which usually means that the coverage of any given topic is superficial. That is not necessarily the case here; a lot of topics are covered in depth. Of course, any one chapter in the book could easily become a book on its own; however the authors do a good job of covering at least the basics of each topic, and in most cases explain sufficiently beyond the core concepts. The book is a success in this arena - the approach is a "this is how you get your job done" versus "this is how it will theoretically be done after you consult the online documentation".
This book also has a few negatives. The writing can be dense, due at least in part to the vastness of subject matter. I ended up rereading sections over and over again, and at times I've had to resort to other references to make sense of parts of this book; e.g., the section on security is filled with so many keywords and layers of detail that I had to start writing terms and definitions down to keep them straight ( a table or detailed diagram would have been nice ). In this sense the writing is often ... linear, which doesn't take away from the density of the topic. The example-based approach the authors chose works very well, but I personally prefer full source listings to the clips and snips from downloadable example code that are used in most places in the book.
Past those few negatives, there is a lot of useful information in the book and its example code. Recommended; invesigate other options if you want, but you'll definately get a lot of use out of this book if you're working with the .NET platform.

Excellent Tutorial

"Application Development Using C# and .Net" is an excellent introduction to the .Net framework. This book is for the experienced developer with knowledge of an object oriented language such as Java or C++. The first part of the book gives a quick introduction to the basics of the .Net framework. The next three chapters give a rundown of C#. Three chapters is hardly enough to explain any programming language in any detail but the book provides enough detail to make a Java/C++ programmer feel comfortable with the language. The remainder of the book covers using C# to develop programs in the .Net framework. ASP.NET, windows forms and ADO.NET are all covered with a running case study. Building assemblies is given a good amount of coverage as is security. Web services are also explained with examples showing how to use WSDL to generate client proxy classes. I especially appreciated how all the pieces were demonstrated through the VisualStudio IDE. This was the first book I read on .Net and after having finished it I felt that I had a good, if basic understanding of the various parts that make up the .Net framework. You should note that the index is almost useless. For example, there is not a single entry for SQL in spite of the book having a chapter on using ADO.NET to access relational databases. As with most introductions, this book does not work as a reference. But as a learning tool, this book excels.

The Meiji Restoration of 1868 is most often seen as a glorious event marking the overthrow of Tokugawa feudalism and the beginning of Japan's modern transformation. Yet it had its dark side. The Aizu domain in northeastern Japan had staunchly supported the old regime. For this it was attacked by the new government's forces from Choshu and Satsuma in the autumn of 1868. Its castle town was burned to the ground, and during a month-long siege, whole families perished. After defeat, the domain was abolished and its samurai population exiled to barren terrain in the far north.

Shiba Goro was born into an Aizu samurai family in 1859. He was just ten years old at the time of the attack, which claimed most of his family. In the cruel world of exile, he lived with his father on the edge of starvation, struggling to survive. Eventually making his way to Tokyo, he became a servant, and though born in an enemy domain, gained entrance to a military school of the new regime. Shiba's abilities were recognized, and he rose through the officer ranks to become a full general - a singular distinction for an Aizu samurai in an army dominated by former samurai of the Choshu domain.

Remembering Aizu tells of Shiba's earlier years. It is an extraordinary story that provides insights and material for a social history of the Restoration and its aftermath. But above all, it is a vividly rendered personal account of courage and determination, loss and remembrance.

Interesting and moving memoir

This is a fairly short book, which I found fascinating. There is a very useful introduction which gives the historical context and details on Shiba's family. The memoir takes place during the early years of the Meiji era, when Japan was undergoing an upheaval and transformation from a feudal state to a modern country.

Gor� Shiba, son of an upper class samurai family, lost his mother, grandmother and 2 sisters during the punitive war against Aizu province. His father and 3 brothers survived, but they were separated, though they managed to keep close ties. He lived from the ages of 10 to 15 as an underpaid servant. At 15 he was accepted into a military school, and his fortunes took a better turn. He eventually retired as a general. This memoirs covers his life from about 8 to 16. It is simply but well told, and often quite moving. It offers a glimpse into Japanese life in those turbulent times not well known in the West.

I highly recommend it.

For a certain audience

Asterisk was a lonely man writing for an outlet, rather then to a friend and so the stories are often complete. Though, I would love to read the letters his friend wrote back to him to get the full conversation. I think the enjoyment of his letters increases if the reader has had personal experience in the Islands of Vanuatu. WIthout a personal context the book would drag on, as he spends time complaining about everything in turns. The thing i adore about Asterisk, is that he seems to hate everything equally one day and love it the next. His disillusionment to find the New Hebrides a much rougher and more complex place then one he had imagined based on his reading and outright obsession with Robert Lewis Stevenson's accounts makes his own tale that much more intriguing. The reader becomes drawn into the story as they watch Asterisk struggle between what he thinks something should be, and what the reality of that thing is. Asterisk possesses the ingrained prejudice of an Englishmen for the time, place and social status and yet he sometimes recognizes that and tries to apologize or over come it within his letters. He writes with good detail and clean language without getting mired in adjectives. Though sometimes very offhand about gruesome events, he addresses realities of life on the plantations without romance. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Non-Fiction, Historical Travel Logs or is interested in learning about the colonial history of Vanuatu.

This is a major work regarding ethnography, sociology and philosophy in general as well as a very fine piece of literature from Robert James Fletcher, who unfortunately was never to produce better than this. Already owning other editions of this book, I wanted to have a look at this paperback one. Well, I guess it is all right for a new reader despite the fact that the author real identity, well known in 1986, could have been put on the cover instead of the initial pseudonym. The poor brute’s life would be one long martyrdom

I first heard about this book while reading Slow Boats Home by Gavin Young. A contact in a Hong Kong shipping office had loaned Young a beaten up copy of this long out of print classic. And Young carried it with him as he travelled by freighter across the South Pacific. The quotes and references he shared were so intriguing that I was determined to track it down for myself. Thankfully it was reissued, and resurrected from the shadowy world of forgotten stories.

“Asterisk”, as the author was known, was a dissatisfied British schoolteacher who had read the letters that Robert Louis Stevenson published from Samoa. And in 1910, at the age of 33, he set off to find his own South Pacific dreams.

Asterisk hoped to make his fortune working on a plantation, but the brutal life that he found quickly disillusioned him. This book — edited and compiled from letters he wrote to his friend Bohun Lynch, and published by that friend without his knowledge – are a masterpiece of directness and honesty.

Asterisk chronicles the hardships of his life and his descent into 7 years of misery with cutting wit and scathing honesty. He wrote about another side of a place that many dreamed of as an enchanted tropical paradise, and he captured a vivid snapshot of a vanished age.

But don’t expect a depressing book. His observations are often hilarious in their inventiveness and language. Take this, for example:

“That very night I caught and slew over 30 fleas inside and outside my trousers. I didn’t try and count the host that escaped me. No, if one is going to be a rough traveler, it doesn’t do to be finicking. […] It is simply impossible to keep free of them. That’s why I don’t keep a dog. The poor brute’s life would be one long martyrdom.”

Yes, the is thoroughly a book of its time, and Asterisk’s racist comments about the natives can be off-putting to modern audiences. On the other hand, he also showed great compassion for the islanders he lived among. He doctored them when they were ill, and hated white planters or traders who maltreated or cheated them.

This is a gritty, honest book that’s extremely difficult to forget. A true travel classic.

Great book for NBA fans

I honestly hadn't known much about Phil Jackson before reading this book. I am amazed at his interest in Buddhism, Zen and things like the art of selflessness. There is obviously a reason he became the greatest coach in the NBA, likely something to do with his open mindedness. You will be amazed and inspired by his story. This brief guide will definitely give you a taste of what you will read in the fill version of Eleven Rings. I highly recommend checking out this 30 minute guide first, full of great reviews as well as an in depth synopsis of the actual book.

This guide offers an enlightening outside angle on Jackson's text, zeroing in on the key themes and messages of the book without giving away any specific scenes. Changed My Work Life

As someone who asserts that baseball is not only the most important sport, but the only sport, I was hesitant to pick up this abbreviated version of Eleven Rings. I was totally surprised by the interest I took in basketball as I read this book. This overview reflects the refreshingly honest attitude Jackson holds while pointing out strategies business professionals can use to enhance their team abilities. I found so many useful and practical suggestions to adopt in my work life and it's made such a difference in how I approach teamwork.

The book reads so easily and puts some complex philosophical ideas into terms that were simple enough to understand but still effective. I really appreciated the examples and analogies throughout this book as well. Definitely recommended!

Every Parent Needs to Read this Book!

This was one of the BEST parenting books I have ever read!! Milton talks about 'entitled children' and how we, as parents, are inadvertantly creating them in droves. He discusses ways to keep your kids from mooching off you forever. He also will teach you how to parent so that your child can someday be independant (also known as old-fashion values). This is the book to read if you DON'T want your 30-year old child still living in your house!

I purchased this book for my daughter after the author visited her school for an assembly. Very powerful speaker and a wonderful book. Not only has my daughter read this book, but several of her friends and mine have read it. Recommended for everyone to read.

Loved this book!!! Great fundamental parenting 101!

As a parent of two grown sons who is on the other side of the parenting spectrum, I can attest to the veracity of Milton's observations. This is not only a great book on parenting, but it matched up squarely wtih my own perspective on the joys, the pearls and the pitfals of the most important job one will ever have. Milton integrates his understanding of child rearing with the approach espoused in the biblical model. It is accurate, straightforward advice unlike many other parenting books that proffer the mealy-mouthed, politically correct advice of so-called child rearing experts who espouse post-modern psycho-babble. As a parent himself, Milton provides practical advise based on real life experiences and observations that help to explain why society has failed to provide an entire generation of youth with the foundational tools, work ethic and motivation needed to succeed.
