Finally! An authentic & excellent cookbook for Calabrian cooking.

I've been searching for a cookbook and travel book with Calabrian roots for so long. Many books are 'Southern Italian' but only delve into the well-known Neopolitan recipies. I am a first-generation Italian-American, whose parents immigrated from Calabria so when I saw these recipes in print I almost cried. Very authentic and fun to see the dialect in there too. The history, stories, recipes and photos are outstanding. Thank you for writing this book. Finalmente! p.s. note to author on the 'Peaches' dessert, you can get Alkermes liquor flavoring in the states, Torre Products in New York carries it. I believe they are in Brooklyn and ship. And if you are reading this wondering if you should buy this book, don't hesitate. I bought a few copies for family to pass on our roots and recipes.

Authentic, comprehensive, and simply gorgeous

As some background, I am an American of Calabrian heritage who has been living in my ancestors' village in Calabria since 2003; I received this book for review on my blog, Bleeding Espresso.

Rosetta Costantino was born in Calabria and moved to America with her family at age 14. Although they left behind much of what was familiar to them, the Costantino family never lost their culinary traditions -- and now Rosetta shares them with us in My Calabria: Rustic Family Cooking from Italy's Undiscovered South.

When paging through My Calabria, you feel like an honorary member of the family at the table as you learn about how Rosetta's father recreated their Calabrian garden in Oakland, California; how various members of the family make the same dish; and also the 11 ingredients every Calabrian pantry should have on hand.

Rosetta also shares information about the historical and cultural influences on Calabrian cuisine and lifestyle, so aside from being a wonderful collection of recipes (150) that includes appetizers through dessert, My Calabria is simply a wonderful resource book on the region -- you're getting so much more than a cookbook here.

The recipes themselves are authentic as they come and easy to follow -- one of the best things about Calabrian cooking is that it's user-friendly as it uses so few ingredients -- and the book is just gorgeous. There are plenty of full-page and other sized color photos throughout, not only of recipes but also of various sights from around Calabria.

From a personal standpoint as someone who has been making Calabrian food ever since I could cook -- first from my grandmother's recipes and now also from my mother-in-law's -- I give this book five very full espresso cups out of five. Rosetta is a wonderful tour guide through this region's food, history, and culture, and I highly recommend My Calabria for anyone who is interested in Calabria, southern Italy, or southern Italian cuisine.

Fabulous Cookbook from one of Italy's Most Rustic Regions

I've lived in Calabria since 2006 and was sent a copy of My Calabria to review for my website, My Bella Vita. I wrote a review there, as well as a few other sites, but since people come here to buy the book-and I always read Amazon reviews before making my own purchases-I wanted to write something here, as well.

It is hard to find reliable English-language information on Calabria and I loved that this cookbook was more than just a collection of recipes. Yes, it is chock-full of authentic Calabrian cooking, homemade pasta, sauces, meat, fish, veggie and dessert dishes, but it also has the history of various places in Calabria, bright, vivid photos (of more than just the food) and it is written in an easy, conversational tone that makes for easy reading.

If you are an Italophile or fan of Calabria, you'll enjoy this cookbook.

Deadend with Yet another Cliffhanger. Waste of money X 7 "books". And It never ends.

I have spent over $35 chasing down this story. Book 7 Time Slip had the worst ending of them all with no ending. In the last 5 pages all this happens, overthrowing 8 books and there is no ending. It is Crazy. We are left with Jayne, heroine, standing in the council in the middle of the night with everyone in their PJs. Jayne announces there is a war going on in the Overworld/Heaven. She says she is married to a dragon. We just found her other marriage to Ben for 7 books was a sham, she had another lover, and now she has a dragon mate? and the book ends! What?
No more explanation, it is a dead end. The author doesn't even pretend to have an ending any more. Save your money.
This series did help me get through a bad flu so I spent the money. Don't waste your money unless you have a flu and are in a desperate place. Because this "series" never ends.

The series itself was really good. I really enjoyed each book

Grrrrr...what can I say about this series, as you can see I made it to book 8 which means I paid for 7 of them. But I'm asking myself why? The series itself was really good. I really enjoyed each book, my frustration stems from the fact that it should not be 8 books, it really wasn't worth spending the money for each book. This is one of those situations when the author should have probably only written 3 books but wanted more money (which she did achieve from me) so wrote 8 instead and the series isn't yet complete. The books were to short for the price asked. If they had each only be $.99 it would have been fine but $4.99 per book is overpriced for this series. So I guess I'm mad at myself that I got suckered in to paying so much for a series that should have cast half the amount.
This would be a 4-5 star series if the author condensed 9 novels into 3 at the $4.99 price

Elle Casey Kicks Ass Again!

I am a huge fan of the "War of the Fae" series, so when Elle Casey dropped the news that she was going to write new books featuring these great characters, I couldn't wait to read them!

"Time Slipping" is the first of these new additions to the series, and it doesn't disappoint! Jayne and the other changelings from Miami are at it again!

I hate reviews that include spoilers, so I won't write much about specifics, but the author has such a creative flair that by the end of the book my adrenaline was pumping as much as Jayne's!

Although a couple of new characters are introduced, "Time Slipping" centers mostly on the group from Miami in a new situation that I think was a brilliant move by the author. Prior to reading this book I re-read the entire series, and "Time Slipping" pretty much picks up where the previous book, "Portal Guardians" ends, with Jayne preparing to spend time with Biad the dragon, who is the new portal guardian to the Underworld. As usual with any of Jayne's new undertakings things don't work out quite as planned.

The author's creative genius never ceases to amaze me. She writes with such a flair for building on her characters' interactions with one another that as soon as you think you know everything there is to know about the relationships between characters, there is always something new and different going on that surprises the reader. Casey also has a flair for dialogue, particularly Jayne's talent for coming up with new ways to use every dirty word you thought had already been used in every possible way imaginable! So, if you are easily offended by a little "colorful" language, consider yourself forewarned!

The last few chapters of "Time Slipping" are heart stopping and really got my adrenaline pumping! And, just as you think you have everything figured out, watch out for a huge plot twist! Finally, as with all of the other books in "The War of the Fae", series, and with what has become something of a signature of this author, "Time Slipping" ends with a huge cliffhanger, which only leaves the reader wanting more.

I cannot wait for the next book!

not really 'a history of magic', more like a bunch of texts ...

This is a really well written book which covers a broad subject very well. It does exactly what it says it does, so there really isn’t a huge need for me to explain it. If you come from a background in the western magical tradition of study and practice, you are actually going to probably find this book a little boring, as much of what is covered if you have been around awhile you are going to be familiar with. But even with that being said (which is why I give it the 4 star rating) his views, and perspective as well as the presentation of the information is really well done. For topics that can get really convoluted and often do by other authors, Copenhaver covered the breath of a (BROAD) subject category and did a really good job with it. The man knows what he is talking about.
I would suggest this book for two reasons:
1. If you have an honest, unbiased interest in the Western Esoteric Traditions, and really don't know anything about what they contain or have to say, or very limited knowledge, by the gods, this is quite honestly probably the best book you could buy, because even if it is the only one you ever end up reading on the subject. You will be light years ahead of when you went into it.
2. If you are a studier and/practitioner of any of these traditions. You will probably as I mentioned above get a bit bored. But I recommend it because it really is a wonderful re-study of subjects which never hurts to be sharp on, and it never hurts to keep some of the "should be well known facts" present and fresh in your mind.
If you don't fall under 1 or 2, and are just someone looking for Demonology, How to curse, caste spells, or anything that is just going to get you what you want... well then avoid this book. You will get bored...quickly....
I know I don't include much as far as content, but aside from critiquing based completely on presentation, and conclusion. The book description, title and table of contents says it all.
